17	17	HJR___ HONORING WOODIE PUGH FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO
18	18	EDUCATION AND PUBLIC SERVICE.
19	19	WHEREAS, it is with great pride and appreciation that
20	20	we recognize Woodie Pugh, a consummate public servant whose
21	21	dedication to education and public service has positively
22	22	impacted Clarke County, the State of Alabama, and beyond for
23	23	over five decades; and
24	24	WHEREAS, Woodie Pugh is a trailblazer in Clarke
25	25	County, having served as the county's first Black
26	26	Superintendent of Education and the first Black individual
27	27	to be elected to a countywide office in 2008; and
28	28	WHEREAS, he devoted 30 years of service to Clarke
29	29	County's school system, initially as an agribusiness
30	30	education teacher at Clarke County High School from 1979
31	31	until his retirement in December 2007; and
32	32	WHEREAS, before running for Superintendent, he
33	33	expanded his impact in education as Assistant Principal,
34	34	Athletic Director, and Day Care Coordinator at West
35	35	Oktibbeha County High School in Maben, Mississippi; and
36	36	WHEREAS, he served as Superintendent of Education for
37	37	Clarke County from January 2009 to December 2012 and later
38	38	provided interim leadership as Superintendent for Wilcox
39	39	County in 2013 and Conecuh County in 2015; and
40	40	WHEREAS, his influence extended beyond administrative

70	70	WHEREAS, his influence extended beyond administrative
71	71	roles, as he was a committed mentor and leader in Future
72	72	Farmers of America and a presenter for the Alabama Global
73	73	Vision in 1997; and
74	74	WHEREAS, his excellence in teaching was recognized
75	75	when he was named Walmart Teacher of the Year in 2000,
76	76	underscoring his dedication to student success and
77	77	educational development; and
78	78	WHEREAS, he has contributed to his community through
79	79	service on the Clarke Educators Federal Credit Union Board
80	80	of Directors and the Children's Center of Clarke County,
81	81	Incorporated, as well as through his role as a Selective
82	82	Service Board Member; and
83	83	WHEREAS, he has exemplified strong leadership in
84	84	civic and fraternal organizations, serving as Masonic Grand
85	85	District Deputy for Clarke, Monroe, and Wilcox Counties from
86	86	2007 to 2015, a member of Abraham Consistory 257, Valley of
87	87	Demopolis, and holding the esteemed positions of Most Wise
88	88	from 2016 to 2024 and Commander in Chief of Abraham 257 as
89	89	of December 2024; and
90	90	WHEREAS, his commitment to service extends to his
91	91	past roles as Past Worshipful Master, Past Vice President of
92	92	Men Making a Difference Social and Saving Club, and a
93	93	devoted member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated;
94	94	and
95	95	WHEREAS, a proud native of Coffeeville, Alabama, he
96	96	is the son of the late Mr. Woodie and Mrs. Viola Pugh, and
97	97	the proud father of two daughters, Stacey and Kim, as well
98	98	as a cherished grandfather to three grandchildren, Jaison,

129	129	Jaden, and Jordan; and
130	130	WHEREAS, he is an accomplished scholar and lifelong
131	131	learner, having earned degrees from Alabama A&M University
132	132	in Huntsville and Alabama State University in Montgomery;
133	133	and
134	134	WHEREAS, on the occasion of Kappa Alpha Psi Day at
135	135	the Alabama State Capitol, it is both fitting and a
136	136	privilege to commend Woodie Pugh for his unwavering
137	137	dedication to education, community service, and leadership;
138	138	now therefore,
139	139	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
140	140	HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the Alabama Legislature
141	141	hereby expresses its highest commendation and deepest
142	142	gratitude to Woodie Pugh for his exemplary service and
143	143	outstanding contributions to the State of Alabama.
144	144	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
145	145	resolution be presented to Woodie Pugh as a token of our
146	146	admiration and appreciation.
