1717 HJR___ HONORING WOODIE PUGH FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO
1818 EDUCATION AND PUBLIC SERVICE.
1919 WHEREAS, it is with great pride and appreciation that
2020 we recognize Woodie Pugh, a consummate public servant whose
2121 dedication to education and public service has positively
2222 impacted Clarke County, the State of Alabama, and beyond for
2323 over five decades; and
2424 WHEREAS, Woodie Pugh is a trailblazer in Clarke
2525 County, having served as the county's first Black
2626 Superintendent of Education and the first Black individual
2727 to be elected to a countywide office in 2008; and
2828 WHEREAS, he devoted 30 years of service to Clarke
2929 County's school system, initially as an agribusiness
3030 education teacher at Clarke County High School from 1979
3131 until his retirement in December 2007; and
3232 WHEREAS, before running for Superintendent, he
3333 expanded his impact in education as Assistant Principal,
3434 Athletic Director, and Day Care Coordinator at West
3535 Oktibbeha County High School in Maben, Mississippi; and
3636 WHEREAS, he served as Superintendent of Education for
3737 Clarke County from January 2009 to December 2012 and later
3838 provided interim leadership as Superintendent for Wilcox
3939 County in 2013 and Conecuh County in 2015; and
4040 WHEREAS, his influence extended beyond administrative

7070 WHEREAS, his influence extended beyond administrative
7171 roles, as he was a committed mentor and leader in Future
7272 Farmers of America and a presenter for the Alabama Global
7373 Vision in 1997; and
7474 WHEREAS, his excellence in teaching was recognized
7575 when he was named Walmart Teacher of the Year in 2000,
7676 underscoring his dedication to student success and
7777 educational development; and
7878 WHEREAS, he has contributed to his community through
7979 service on the Clarke Educators Federal Credit Union Board
8080 of Directors and the Children's Center of Clarke County,
8181 Incorporated, as well as through his role as a Selective
8282 Service Board Member; and
8383 WHEREAS, he has exemplified strong leadership in
8484 civic and fraternal organizations, serving as Masonic Grand
8585 District Deputy for Clarke, Monroe, and Wilcox Counties from
8686 2007 to 2015, a member of Abraham Consistory 257, Valley of
8787 Demopolis, and holding the esteemed positions of Most Wise
8888 from 2016 to 2024 and Commander in Chief of Abraham 257 as
8989 of December 2024; and
9090 WHEREAS, his commitment to service extends to his
9191 past roles as Past Worshipful Master, Past Vice President of
9292 Men Making a Difference Social and Saving Club, and a
9393 devoted member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated;
9494 and
9595 WHEREAS, a proud native of Coffeeville, Alabama, he
9696 is the son of the late Mr. Woodie and Mrs. Viola Pugh, and
9797 the proud father of two daughters, Stacey and Kim, as well
9898 as a cherished grandfather to three grandchildren, Jaison,

128128 as a cherished grandfather to three grandchildren, Jaison,
129129 Jaden, and Jordan; and
130130 WHEREAS, he is an accomplished scholar and lifelong
131131 learner, having earned degrees from Alabama A&M University
132132 in Huntsville and Alabama State University in Montgomery;
133133 and
134134 WHEREAS, on the occasion of Kappa Alpha Psi Day at
135135 the Alabama State Capitol, it is both fitting and a
136136 privilege to commend Woodie Pugh for his unwavering
137137 dedication to education, community service, and leadership;
138138 now therefore,
139139 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
140140 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the Alabama Legislature
141141 hereby expresses its highest commendation and deepest
142142 gratitude to Woodie Pugh for his exemplary service and
143143 outstanding contributions to the State of Alabama.
144144 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this
145145 resolution be presented to Woodie Pugh as a token of our
146146 admiration and appreciation.
