WHEREAS, it is with great pride and appreciation that we recognize Woodie Pugh, a consummate public servant whose dedication to education and public service has positively impacted Clarke County, the State of Alabama, and beyond for over five decades; and WHEREAS, Woodie Pugh is a trailblazer in Clarke County, having served as the county's first Black Superintendent of Education and the first Black individual to be elected to a countywide office in 2008; and WHEREAS, he devoted 30 years of service to Clarke County's school system, initially as an agribusiness education teacher at Clarke County High School from 1979 until his retirement in December 2007; and WHEREAS, before running for Superintendent, he expanded his impact in education as Assistant Principal, Athletic Director, and Day Care Coordinator at West Oktibbeha County High School in Maben, Mississippi; and WHEREAS, he served as Superintendent of Education for Clarke County from January 2009 to December 2012 and later provided interim leadership as Superintendent for Wilcox County in 2013 and Conecuh County in 2015; and WHEREAS, his influence extended beyond administrative 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 HR103 INTRODUCED Page 2 WHEREAS, his influence extended beyond administrative roles, as he was a committed mentor and leader in Future Farmers of America and a presenter for the Alabama Global Vision in 1997; and WHEREAS, his excellence in teaching was recognized when he was named Walmart Teacher of the Year in 2000, underscoring his dedication to student success and educational development; and WHEREAS, he has contributed to his community through service on the Clarke Educators Federal Credit Union Board of Directors and the Children's Center of Clarke County, Incorporated, as well as through his role as a Selective Service Board Member; and WHEREAS, he has exemplified strong leadership in civic and fraternal organizations, serving as Masonic Grand District Deputy for Clarke, Monroe, and Wilcox Counties from 2007 to 2015, a member of Abraham Consistory 257, Valley of Demopolis, and holding the esteemed positions of Most Wise from 2016 to 2024 and Commander in Chief of Abraham 257 as of December 2024; and WHEREAS, his commitment to service extends to his past roles as Past Worshipful Master, Past Vice President of Men Making a Difference Social and Saving Club, and a devoted member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated; and WHEREAS, a proud native of Coffeeville, Alabama, he is the son of the late Mr. Woodie and Mrs. Viola Pugh, and the proud father of two daughters, Stacey and Kim, as well as a cherished grandfather to three grandchildren, Jaison, 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 51 52 53 54 55 56 HR103 INTRODUCED Page 3 as a cherished grandfather to three grandchildren, Jaison, Jaden, and Jordan; and WHEREAS, he is an accomplished scholar and lifelong learner, having earned degrees from Alabama A&M University in Huntsville and Alabama State University in Montgomery; and WHEREAS, on the occasion of Kappa Alpha Psi Day at the Alabama State Capitol, it is both fitting and a privilege to commend Woodie Pugh for his unwavering dedication to education, community service, and leadership; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA , That highest commendation and deepest gratitude are expressed to Woodie Pugh for his exemplary service and outstanding contributions to the State of Alabama.
