1515 HR____ RECOGNIZING CATRENA NORRIS CARTER FOR HER
1616 ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN ADVOCATING FOR CIVIL RIGHTS.
1717 WHEREAS, with great pride and special pleasure,
1818 highest commendations are conveyed to Catrena Norris Carter
1919 for her unwavering fight in ensuring that civil rights are
2020 not forgotten; and
2121 WHEREAS, Ms. Carter is a native of Selma and received
2222 a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from The University
2323 of Alabama at Birmingham after spending two years on a
2424 performing arts scholarship at Loretto Heights College in
2525 Denver, Colorado; and
2626 WHEREAS, Catrena is a 35-year veteran of both civil
2727 and women's rights movements in America; that passion has
2828 led to her founding several nonprofit organizations that
2929 have aided oppressed people in finding the help and justice
3030 they deserve; and
3131 WHEREAS, Catrena co-founded and is currently CEO of
3232 Salute Selma, Incorporated, a nonprofit organization
3333 designed to take the lessons of the Civil Rights Movement
3434 and apply these solutions to everyday business practices; in
3535 2020, on the 55th Anniversary of the Historic Selma to
3636 Montgomery March, Salute Selma partnered with the National
3737 Pan-Hellenic Council to organize the first ever Black Women
3838 Led March, where more than 30,000 women, activists, and

6868 Led March, where more than 30,000 women, activists, and
6969 citizens showed up from across the globe to commemorate that
7070 legendary march; and
7171 WHEREAS, for three decades, Ms. Carter has led
7272 successful efforts as the National Coordinator of the Bridge
7373 Crossing Jubilee, Incorporated, an organization that founded
7474 the annual reenactment of the 1965 Bridge Crossing, which
7575 has brought hundreds of thousands of supporters to Selma,
7676 including former Presidents Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, Barrack
7777 Obama, and George W. Bush; and
7878 WHEREAS, Catrena also founded Women of Will (WOW), a
7979 nonprofit that has trained hundreds of women to run for
8080 political office and headed the "Vote or Die" movement which
8181 led to Doug Jones becoming the first United States Senator
8282 representing the Democratic Party of Alabama; and
8383 WHEREAS, Ms. Carter was Associate Publisher of the
8484 publication "Who's Who in Black Alabama" and has over 20
8585 years of award-winning hospitality experience; she was the
8686 former Director of Sales and Marketing for the Historic
8787 Redmont Hotel and the Tutwiler Hotel; she received national
8888 recognition from Wyndham International as the 2010 Best of
8989 by Request winner, before receiving the Restaurant and
9090 Hospitality Association's prestigious Hospitality Manager of
9191 the Year for the State of Alabama; in 2020, she received the
9292 Best of Minority Business Award for nonprofits; in 2015, she
9393 was nominated as one of al.com's Women Who Shape the State
9494 Award and was named one of 2015's Top 40 Women of Influence
9595 in the Southeast; in 2013, she was voted one of the Top 10
9696 Powerhouse Women in the State of Alabama and received the

127127 Birmingham Spotlight Award along with the NAACP's Regional
128128 2014's Women of Wisdom Award; now therefore,
129129 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
130130 LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That civil rights advocate, Catrena
131131 Norris Carter, is highly commended for her many long-lasting
132132 contributions and achievements over the course of her
133133 career, and this resolution is offered to her as evidence of
134134 our high regard and appreciation for her sustained advocacy
135135 for civil rights in her community and all over the world.
