19 | 19 | | we celebrate and remember Eliza Jane Manuel at the Fourth |

20 | 20 | | Annual Foot Soldiers Celebration for her lasting |

21 | 21 | | contributions to the Civil Rights Movement ; and |

22 | 22 | | WHEREAS,Eliza Jane Manuel was born on August 3, |
---|
23 | 23 | | 1925, in Minter, Alabama; as a devoted mother of nine, she |
---|
24 | 24 | | always instilled in her children the importance of keeping |
---|
25 | 25 | | God first and trusting in His will ; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, between 1963 and 1965, Eliza Jane Manuel |
---|
27 | 27 | | took a courageous stand in the fight for voting rights, |
---|
28 | 28 | | marching alongside her eldest son, Johnny, lovingly known as |
---|
29 | 29 | | "Boweaver"; while Johnny would go on to complete the |
---|
30 | 30 | | historic march to Montgomery, Ms. Manuel remained deeply |
---|
31 | 31 | | involved in the movement; each night, she walked with her |
---|
32 | 32 | | neighbors from East Selma to Brown Chapel to attend mass |
---|
33 | 33 | | meetings; she also dedicated her time to the kitchen at |
---|
34 | 34 | | Brown Chapel, preparing meals for the brave marchers in |
---|
35 | 35 | | their fight for equality ; and |

36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Eliza Jane Manuel deeply loved her church, |

37 | 37 | | Shiloh Baptist, where she faithfully served as a Sunday |
