1515 HR____ COMMENDING SADIE MAE SIMMONS MITCHELL MOSS AT THE
1616 FOURTH ANNUAL FOOT SOLDIERS CELEBRATION FOR HER
1717 CONTRIBUTIONS DURING THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT.
1818 WHEREAS, it is with immense pride and pleasure that
1919 we celebrate and remember Sadie Mae Simmons Mitchell Moss at
2020 the Fourth Annual Foot Soldiers Celebration for her lasting
2121 contributions to the Civil Rights Movement; and
2222 WHEREAS, Sadie Moss was born on January 19, 1942, to
2323 the late Frances and Walter Simmons in Orrville, Alabama;
2424 her family moved to Selma when she was just two years old;
2525 she attended elementary school at Selma University and Clark
2626 Elementary School before going on to high school at R.B.
2727 Hudson High School; she continued her education at Alabama
2828 State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science
2929 Degree, a Master Degree, and an Education Specialist Degree;
3030 her educational journey began at Selma University, and she
3131 has spent much of her life in service to the youth of Selma
3232 and Dallas County; and
3333 WHEREAS, for over 50 years, she has been dedicated to
3434 educating the young people in her community; she has worked
3535 as a teacher, a counselor, and now as the Director of the
3636 McRae Gaines Learning Center, a position she has held since
3737 2005; she now has the privilege of working with children
3838 from 12 months to seven years old, whom she affectionately

6868 from 12 months to seven years old, whom she affectionately
6969 calls her "babies"; and
7070 WHEREAS, in recognition of her many years of
7171 dedication, the school's summer learning program was named
7272 in her honor in 2018; the program, called the "Sadie Moss
7373 Summer Learning Institute," provides critical learning
7474 opportunities in English, mathematics, the arts, and
7575 physical activity for children ages four to eight; and
7676 WHEREAS, in addition to her work in education, she
7777 has been heavily involved in the Selma community; she became
7878 a member of the Selma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta
7979 Sorority, Incorporated, in 1987 and served as President from
8080 2000-2004 and 2008-2012; through her involvement, she
8181 volunteered throughout the city and Dallas County in many
8282 capacities, from mentoring youth through the Delta Academy
8383 Program to participating in events like ringing bells for
8484 the Salvation Army, Adopt-a-Mile, and GetFit, Selma!; and
8585 WHEREAS, in addition to her community service, she is
8686 proud to have been a part of the Civil Rights Movement as a
8787 Foot Soldier; she marched and was even arrested and held at
8888 the old National Guard Armory; and
8989 WHEREAS, she retired in 2005 from the Selma City
9090 School System after spending 18 years as a fifth-grade
9191 teacher; before that, she worked as an elementary guidance
9292 counselor and taught at Concordia; throughout her career,
9393 her mission has always been to serve the children of Selma
9494 and Dallas County, ensuring they have the education and
9595 support they need to thrive; and
9696 WHEREAS, she is a proud mother of three children,

126126 WHEREAS, she is a proud mother of three children,
127127 Ronald, Donald, and Stephanie Mitchell, and has been blessed
128128 with two godsons, Gary Chapelle and Ivery Williams, as well
129129 as six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; her family
130130 has been an incredible support throughout her life; she is
131131 also fortunate to have one brother, Alfred, and two sisters,
132132 Jo Ann and Lynda, who have been steadfast pillars in her
133133 life; and
134134 WHEREAS, Sadie Mitchell Moss demonstrated uncommon
135135 determination to pursue the right to vote and other
136136 opportunities which had been denied to African Americans
137137 through the practice of segregation; as a result of the
138138 courage and persistence of Mrs. Parrish and other foot
139139 soldiers, the federal government passed the Voting Rights
140140 Act of 1965; now therefore,
141141 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
142142 LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That at the occasion of the Fourth
143143 Annual Foot Soldiers Celebration, Sadie Mae Simmons Mitchell
144144 Moss is recognized as a formidable force during the Civil
145145 Rights Movement and is commended for her extraordinary
146146 contributions to securing the right to vote for African
147147 Americans throughout the country and in her home State of
148148 Alabama.
