19 | 19 | | we celebrate and remember Sadie Mae Simmons Mitchell Moss at |

20 | 20 | | the Fourth Annual Foot Soldiers Celebration for her lasting |

21 | 21 | | contributions to the Civil Rights Movement; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Sadie Moss was born on January 19, 1942, to |
---|
23 | 23 | | the late Frances and Walter Simmons in Orrville, Alabama; |
---|
24 | 24 | | her family moved to Selma when she was just two years old; |
---|
25 | 25 | | she attended elementary school at Selma University and Clark |
---|
26 | 26 | | Elementary School before going on to high school at R.B. |
---|
27 | 27 | | Hudson High School; she continued her education at Alabama |
---|
28 | 28 | | State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science |
---|
29 | 29 | | Degree, a Master Degree, and an Education Specialist Degree; |
---|
30 | 30 | | her educational journey began at Selma University, and she |
---|
31 | 31 | | has spent much of her life in service to the youth of Selma |
---|
32 | 32 | | and Dallas County; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, for over 50 years, she has been dedicated to |

34 | 34 | | educating the young people in her community; she has worked |
---|
35 | 35 | | as a teacher, a counselor, and now as the Director of the |
---|
36 | 36 | | McRae Gaines Learning Center, a position she has held since |
---|
37 | 37 | | 2005; she now has the privilege of working with children |

38 | 38 | | from 12 months to seven years old, whom she affectionately |

78 | 78 | | a member of the Selma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta |

79 | 79 | | Sorority, Incorporated, in 1987 and served as President from |

80 | 80 | | 2000-2004 and 2008-2012; through her involvement, she |

81 | 81 | | volunteered throughout the city and Dallas County in many |
---|
82 | 82 | | capacities, from mentoring youth through the Delta Academy |
---|
83 | 83 | | Program to participating in events like ringing bells for |
---|
84 | 84 | | the Salvation Army, Adopt-a-Mile, and GetFit, Selma!; and |
---|
85 | 85 | | WHEREAS, in addition to her community service, she is |
---|
86 | 86 | | proud to have been a part of the Civil Rights Movement as a |
---|
87 | 87 | | Foot Soldier; she marched and was even arrested and held at |
---|
88 | 88 | | the old National Guard Armory; and |
---|
89 | 89 | | WHEREAS, she retired in 2005 from the Selma City |
---|
90 | 90 | | School System after spending 18 years as a fifth-grade |
---|
91 | 91 | | teacher; before that, she worked as an elementary guidance |

92 | 92 | | counselor and taught at Concordia; throughout her career, |
---|
93 | 93 | | her mission has always been to serve the children of Selma |
---|
94 | 94 | | and Dallas County, ensuring they have the education and |
