HR____ MOURNING THE DEATH AND CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF
CHARLES CORNELIUS BROOKS, JR.
WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the
death on March 8, 2025, of Charles Cornelius Brooks, Jr., of
Birmingham, Alabama; his passing leaves a void in the lives
of his loving family, many friends, and the community, where
he was highly regarded; and 
WHEREAS, Charles Cornelius Brooks, Jr.,
affectionately known as Brooks, was born on December 28,
1945, in Birmingham to Minnie Lee Tompkins and Charles
Cornelius Brooks, Sr.; he attended Carrie T. Tuggle
Elementary School and later matriculated to Parker High
School, where he was a proud graduate of the Class of 1964;
and 
WHEREAS, Charles Brooks accepted Christ as his Savior
and united with New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership
of his close friend, Pastor Gregory L. Clarke; and 
WHEREAS, Charles Brooks led a life of service working
in the funeral industry; he professionally managed with
dignity thousands of funeral services, including those for
young victims who were killed in two high-profile civil
rights incidents in the City of Birmingham; and
WHEREAS, he began working in the funeral industry at
Poole Funeral Chapel, where his career choice developed into

Poole Funeral Chapel, where his career choice developed into
a labor of love; in 1980, he accepted a position as a
funeral director at Bushelon Funeral Home, Incorporated,
where he was a loyal and beloved staff member for 45 years;
he generously gave of his time and talents for decades
mentoring other employees in how to care, with dignity and
grace, for a deceased person's grieving loved ones; and
WHEREAS, Charles Brooks was preceded in death by his
parents; daughter, Minnie L. Brooks; brother, Malcom Jerome
Brooks; and sister, Louise Cotton; and
WHEREAS, left to cherish the memories of a man who
had a heart of gold are his daughter, Valerie Brooks;
grandchildren, Perez Brooks, Sr. (Rosalyn), D'wana Brooks
Owens (Demetrius), Gejuanica Garner, April Griffin, and
Cheryl Watson; 16 great-grandchildren; his Bushelon and
Poole work families; and many other much-loved extended
family members and devoted friends; and
WHEREAS, although his presence will be greatly
missed, the memory of Charles Cornelius Brooks, Jr. will be
cherished in the hearts of all who knew and loved him; now
therefore, 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That the death of Charles Cornelius
Brooks, Jr. is recorded with deep sadness, and this
resolution is offered in tribute to his life and service to
others, along with heartfelt sympathy to his family, whose
grief is shared by many.
