1515 HR____ COMMENDING DR. SHANNEN DEE WILLIAMS FOR PROFESSIONAL
1616 ACHIEVEMENTS AND LASTING IMPACT ON AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY
1717 PERTAINING TO WOMEN AND RELIGION.
1818 WHEREAS, with great pleasure and pride, highest
1919 commendations are conveyed to Dr. Shannen Dee Williams for
2020 her professional achievements and lasting impact on African
2121 American History, particularly in regard to women and
2222 religion; and
2323 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams earned her Bachelor of Arts in
2424 History with magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors from
2525 Agnes Scott College; a Master of Arts in Afro-American
2626 Studies from the University of Wisconsin at Madison; and a
2727 Doctor of Philosophy in History from Rutgers University; she
2828 is a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American
2929 Historians and an Associate Professor of History at the
3030 University of Dayton; and
3131 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams' research on the African
3232 American experience, with specializations in women's,
3333 religious, and Black freedom movement history, has been
3434 supported by a host of grants and fellowships, including a
3535 Scholar-in-Residence Fellowship at the Schomburg Center for
3636 Research in Black Culture, a Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral
3737 Fellowship in Religion and Ethics from the Woodrow Wilson
3838 National Foundation, an Albert J. Beveridge Grant from the

7474 National Catholic Reporter; she penned the award-winning
7575 column, "The Griot's Cross" in the Catholic News Service
7676 from 2020 to 2022; and
7777 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams authored Subversive Habits:
7878 Black Catholic Nuns in the Long African American Freedom
7979 Struggle, which was named a top five book published in
8080 religion by Publisher's Weekly; received the 2022 Letitia
8181 Woods Brown Award for Best Book in African American Women's
8282 History from the Association of Black Women Historians; and
8383 the 2023 Wesley-Logan Prize for Outstanding Book in African
8484 Diaspora History from the American Historical Association
8585 and the Association for the Study of African American Life
8686 and History; and
8787 WHEREAS, a lifelong Catholic, Dr. Williams is the
8888 first Black woman elected to the Executive Council of the
8989 American Catholic Historical Association; she is a
9090 co-founder of the Fleming-Morrow Endowment in African
9191 American History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville;
9292 she successfully submitted proposals to establish the Mother
9393 Mary Lange Lecture in Black Catholic History at Villanova
9494 University and the Cyprian Davis, O.S.B., Prize through the
9595 American Catholic Historical Association and the Cushwa
9696 Center for the Study of American Catholicism at the
