1515 HR___ CELEBRATING ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA DAY ON APRIL 3, 2025.
1616 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is
1717 the first intercollegiate historically African American
1818 sorority; it was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard
1919 University in Washington, D.C., by a group of 16 students
2020 led by Ethel Hedgemon Lyle; the sorority was incorporated on
2121 January 29, 1913; and
2222 WHEREAS, the sorority is one of the nation's largest
2323 Greek Letter Organizations, having more than 350,000 members
2424 in 1,024 chapters in the United States of America and
2525 several other countries; the members share the bonds of
2626 sisterhood and are committed to servant-leadership; and
2727 WHEREAS, the Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa
2828 Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, received its charter on
2929 October 24, 1924, in Birmingham, Alabama, becoming the 15th
3030 chapter of the sorority and the first graduate chapter to be
3131 chartered in the Southeastern Region; the eight charter
3232 members, Hilda Evans, Vivian F. Bell, Jessie Coleman, Wilma
3333 Davis, Mabel Harris, Eunice Hudson, Thelma Kingsley, and
3434 Vernona Pierce, became the first African American members of
3535 a sorority in the State of Alabama; and
3636 WHEREAS, the chapter's membership has included
3737 thousands of professional women who are dedicated public
3838 servants and graduates from universities throughout the

6969 United States; today, the chapter membership stands at 385,
7070 the largest in the chapter's history; and
7171 WHEREAS, in the early 1950s, under the leadership of
7272 A. Lucile Brewer, the Omicron Omega Chapter experienced
7373 another milestone by becoming the first Black Greek Letter
7474 Organization to purchase a chapter house in the State of
7575 Alabama; additionally, in this same timeframe, they were
7676 instrumental in establishing the Birmingham Chapter of the
7777 Panhellenic Council; and
7878 WHEREAS, over the course of the last century, the
7979 Omicron Omega Chapter has had a profound philanthropic
8080 impact on the greater Birmingham community, having donated
8181 over $1.5 million in charitable contributions to
8282 organizations such as the United Negro College Fund,
8383 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People,
8484 Miles College, The Sickle Cell Foundation of Central
8585 Alabama, March of Dimes, Dance Across Birmingham, and the
8686 American Heart Association; and
8787 WHEREAS, additionally, the Omicron Omega Chapter has
8888 invested time and financial support to Birmingham children
8989 and their education; the members have spent thousands of
9090 hours volunteering in local schools, and the Chapter has
9191 distributed over $500,000 in college scholarships to
9292 Birmingham-area students; and
9393 WHEREAS, the Omicron Omega Chapter has overseen the
9494 establishment of five undergraduate chapters on college
9595 campuses in the greater Birmingham area: Gamma Pi at Miles
9696 College in 1970; Iota Phi at The University of Alabama at

126126 College in 1970; Iota Phi at The University of Alabama at
127127 Birmingham in 1975; Mu Mu at the University of Montevallo in
128128 1978; Nu Delta at Birmingham-Southern College in 1979; and
129129 Omicron Mu at Samford University in 1988; and
130130 WHEREAS, in 2001, the Omicron Omega Chapter
131131 established its philanthropic arm, the Cultural and
132132 Educational Advancement Foundation (CEAF), to further its
133133 philanthropic impact on the Birmingham community; in 2022,
134134 CEAF opened The Pearl Center, a $1.6 million facility in the
135135 Bush Hills neighborhood designed as a space to facilitate
136136 charitable endeavors for the larger Birmingham community;
137137 now therefore,
138138 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
139139 LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That on Thursday, April 3, 2025, we
140140 celebrate Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Day at the Capitol, and
141141 we express sincere appreciation to the Omicron Omega Chapter
142142 for their continuing dedication to service to the community
143143 and to the great State of Alabama; we wish Alpha Kappa Alpha
144144 Sorority, Incorporated, continued success in all future
145145 endeavors.
