15	15	HR____ HONORING MISS PRESTLEY SKELTON FOR WINNING THE 2025
16	16	AMERICAN LEGION DEPARTMENT OF ALABAMA ORATORICAL
17	17	COMPETITION.
18	18	WHEREAS, we proudly congratulate Miss Prestley
19	19	Skelton for winning the 2025 American Legion Department of
20	20	Alabama Oratorical Contest, held in Montgomery, Alabama, on
21	21	March 22, 2025; and
22	22	WHEREAS, Miss Skelton is an 11th-grade student at
23	23	Jasper High School, where her speech curriculum, guidance
24	24	from her teachers, and family support have played a key role
25	25	in her success; and
26	26	WHEREAS, the American Legion Oratorical Contest aims
27	27	to enhance students' knowledge of the U.S. Constitution,
28	28	offering scholarships that can be applied at colleges
29	29	nationwide; the competition starts at the post level,
30	30	advancing through district, division, and state levels,
31	31	ultimately culminating in a national competition; and
32	32	WHEREAS, contestants deliver an 8-10 minute prepared
33	33	oration on an aspect of the Constitution, followed by an
34	34	assigned topic; the oration emphasizes the duties and
35	35	obligations of citizens to our government, and the assigned
36	36	topic must be presented in a 3-5 minute oration; and
37	37	WHEREAS, Miss Skelton triumphed at the local Post 23
38	38	contest in Graysville, Alabama; the 21st District contest in

68	68	contest in Graysville, Alabama; the 21st District contest in
69	69	Hoover; the 2nd Division contest in Hoover; and at the
70	70	American Legion Department of Alabama state finals in
71	71	Montgomery; her prepared oration entitled "Defending the
72	72	Constitution to Keep Our Freedoms" and her assigned topic on
73	73	"Amendment XIV, Section 1" earned her a $2,500 scholarship
74	74	for her first-place finish; and
75	75	WHEREAS, Miss Skelton will represent the American
76	76	Legion Department of Alabama at the 2025 National High
77	77	School Oratorical Contest Finals at Hillsdale College in
78	78	Michigan on May 17-18, joining 55 students worldwide for a
79	79	chance to win a $25,000 scholarship; now therefore,
80	80	BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
81	81	LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That we extend our highest
82	82	commendations to Miss Prestley Skelton for her victory in
83	83	the 2025 American Legion Department of Alabama Oratorical
84	84	Contest and wish her continued success in all future
85	85	endeavors.
