1515 HR____ MOURNING THE DEATH AND CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF
1616 REVEREND MELVYN WATSON SALTER.
1717 WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the
1818 death of Reverend Melvyn Watson Salter, on April 13, 2025,
1919 at the age of 83; his departure leaves a void in the lives
2020 of his loving family, many friends, and the community where
2121 he was highly regarded; and
2222 WHEREAS, Melvyn Salter entered the ministry in 1957
2323 at Inglenook Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, and
2424 continued in ministry his entire life; he was a chaplain at
2525 the local hospital and a faithful servant to his local
2626 community through his role as the Judge of Probate of
2727 Cherokee County from 2008-2013; and
2828 WHEREAS, he received his Bachelor of Arts from
2929 Samford University in 1965 and his Master of Divinity from
3030 Southeastern Baptist Seminary; from there, he would go on to
3131 lead several churches as pastor, including Beaver Creek
3232 Baptist Church in Linden, Alabama, and Lamison Baptist
3333 Church in Lamison, Alabama, (1963-1965); Maple Springs
3434 Baptist Church in Louisburg, North Carolina, (1968-1970);
3535 and First Baptist Church in Centre, Alabama, (1976-1998);

3737 WHEREAS, Reverend Salter's other achievements include
3838 establishing the Chaplain's program at East Alabama Medical

6868 establishing the Chaplain's program at East Alabama Medical
6969 Center, leading the first interracial worship service in
7070 Opelika and Lee County; and chairing the Advisory Board of
7171 Auburn and Jacksonville State Baptist Campus Ministry
7272 Programs, the Board for the Baptist Health System Advisory
7373 Board, and The Manor, a senior housing facility; and
7474 WHEREAS, Reverend Salter was preceded in death by his
7575 parents, Roy and Ovell Salter; sisters, Marie Williams and
7676 Betty Dunning; and nephew, Dale Williams; he will be
7777 lovingly remembered by his loving wife of 61 years, Doris;
7878 son, Duane Salter (Erin); daughter, Sheri Green (Jerry);
7979 grandchildren, Hunter Huffman, Grayson Huffman, and Hayden
8080 Huffman; sisters, Mary Jo Sanders (Neal) and Linda Hayes
8181 (Ray); brother-in-law, Robert Williams; and many nieces,
8282 nephews, and loved ones ; and
8383 WHEREAS, beyond his service to the church and
8484 professional capacities, Reverend Salter lived a life of
8585 caring for everyone, with an immense love for family and any
8686 person he met along the way; his capabilities allowed him to
8787 turn every negative into a positive, and his strong faith in
8888 Jesus Christ helped him persevere; now therefore,
8989 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9090 LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That the death of Reverend Melvyn
9191 Watson Salter is recorded with deep sadness, and this
9292 resolution is offered to his family in tribute to his life
9393 and with heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones whose grief is
9494 shared by many.
