1515 HR____ MOURNING THE DEATH AND CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF DR.
1616 MARGARET ANN BRELAND-BRADLEY.
1717 WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the
1818 death of Dr. Margaret Ann Breland-Bradley of Brewton,
1919 Alabama, on February 8, 2025, at the age of 77; and
2020 WHEREAS, her departure leaves a void in the lives of
2121 her loving family, many friends, and the communities in
2222 Alabama and New York where she was highly regarded; and
2323 WHEREAS, Margaret Ann Breland was born on September
2424 19, 1947, to Milton Homer Breland and Ruby Clyde Preyer; she
2525 was the oldest sibling of four sisters and seven brothers;
2626 it was during her childhood that she knew that she wanted to
2727 be an educator, frequently tutoring her brothers and
2828 sisters; she was an honor roll student and a graduate of
2929 Southern Normal School, Class of 1965; and
3030 WHEREAS, Margaret Breland married her high school
3131 sweetheart, Charlie Bradley, Jr.; the couple moved to New
3232 York and she embarked on her higher education journey; she
3333 earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in
3434 1971, a Master of Education with a focus on Reading in 1974,
3535 and an Educational Leadership School District Administration
3636 degree in 1977, all from Queens College; and she earned her
3737 Doctor of Philosophy in Gifted Education from Columbia
3838 University in 1990; and

6969 WHEREAS, as an educator, Dr. Bradley touched the
7070 lives of many students and mentored many young teachers;
7171 from 1972 to 1998, she advanced from special education
7272 teacher to special education coordinator, assistant
7373 principal, principal, and community superintendent of
7474 schools in New York City Public Schools; she accepted a
7575 position as principal of P.S. 223 Queens, where she made an
7676 impact on students, teachers, and families; she brought a
7777 culture of excellence and learning to the school, winning
7878 over the faculty and teaching students to believe in
7979 themselves through the practice of daily positive
8080 affirmations; the school became known for its Multicultural
8181 Program that she pioneered; she shined as a brilliant and
8282 effective leader; and
8383 WHEREAS, Dr. Bradley returned to Brewton and was the
8484 first woman and African American to be appointed
8585 Superintendent of Schools for the Escambia County Board of
8686 Education, serving from 1998 to 2000; when she moved home,
8787 it was with the goal of reopening the Southern Normal School
8888 as the Brewton Campus of Alabama State University, which she
8989 accomplished and served as its Chief Executive Officer from
9090 2002 to 2006; she developed and administered the programs at
9191 the new campus, including after-school and Saturday
9292 enrichment programs for K-12 students and professional
9393 development programs for teachers and school administrators;
9494 she attained funding and developed a Principals Center for
9595 local and Black Belt counties in Alabama; and instituted
9696 many more programs; and

127127 WHEREAS, Dr. Bradley was predeceased by her parents;
128128 stepfather, Joseph Henry Washington, Sr.; husband; and
129129 brothers, Charles Washington and Dwayne Breland; she will be
130130 lovingly remembered by her children, Charles Terrance
131131 Bradley and Kwana Makeisha Bradley; brothers and sisters;
132132 and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, colleagues,
133133 and friends; and
134134 WHEREAS, Dr. Bradley was a lifetime member of Delta
135135 Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and a member of the Lily
136136 Chapter #592, Order of the Eastern Star; although her joyful
137137 presence will be greatly missed, the memory of Margaret Ann
138138 Breland-Bradley will be cherished in the hearts of all who
139139 knew and loved her; now therefore,
140140 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
141141 LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That the death of Dr. Margaret Ann
142142 Breland-Bradley is recorded with deep sadness, and this
143143 resolution is offered to her family in tribute to her life
144144 and with heartfelt sympathy to her loved ones whose grief is
145145 shared by many.
