26	25		SJR___ COMMENDING LANNIE'S BAR-B-Q SPOT ON BEING NAMED ONE
27	26		OF USA TODAY'S 2025 RESTAURANTS OF THE YEAR.
28	27		WHEREAS, with great pride and special pleasure, we
29	28		commend Lannie's Bar-B-Q Spot, a Selma institution and one
30	29		of the oldest barbecue restaurants in Alabama, for being
31	30		named one of USA Today's 2025 Restaurants of the Year; and
32	31		WHEREAS, the USA Today list includes 45 restaurants
33	32		in 27 states, from white-tablecloth restaurants to taco
34	33		stands and burger joints; Lannie's is the only Alabama
35	34		restaurant on the list, which was compiled by food writers
36	35		across the USA Today Network; the USA Today writers chose
37	36		"restaurants that surprise and delight them, ones that they
38	37		return to again and again, ones they like to recommend to
39	38		out-of-towners"; and
40	39		WHEREAS, for five generations, Lannie's Bar-B-Q Spot
41	40		has served customers just across Minter Avenue from where it
42	41		all started 80 years ago; along the way, it has weathered
43	42		storms, both natural and political, and is ready to face the
44	43		coming decades in a brand-new building; the operators are
45	44		not the only generational component in this formula of
46	45		smoked pork, fried fish, burgers, and fries; customers, too,
47	46		have been coming here for generations; the fiery red,
48	47		vinegar-based sauce is just as ingrained in the history here
49	48		as the dark prairie soil that gives the Black Belt region

81	80		WHEREAS, Lannie's story goes back to 1944, when
82	81		founders Lannie and Will Travis started barbecuing hogs in a
83	82		cinder-block pit next to their Minter Avenue home; last
84	83		summer, a year after tearing down their old building, the
85	84		grandchildren of the founders reopened the family business
86	85		in a new, larger space that will continue Lannie's tradition
87	86		for years to come; and
88	87		WHEREAS, tucked away in a historically Black
89	88		neighborhood in eastern Selma, the family-owned barbecue
90	89		joint has always been a place where everyone felt welcome;
91	90		even during the turbulent 1960s, when Selma was on the front
92	91		lines of the Civil Rights Movement, Lannie's was a calm in
93	92		the storm; now therefore,
94	93		BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
95	94		HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Lannie's Bar-B-Q Spot is
96	95		highly commended and congratulated for being chosen as one
97	96		of USA Today's 2025 Restaurants of the Year, and best wishes
98	97		are extended for continued success in all future endeavors.
