2625 SJR___ RECOGNIZING JUNE AS CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
2726 IN ALABAMA.
2827 WHEREAS, in 2006, President George W. Bush designated
2928 the month of June as Caribbean American Heritage Month to
3029 raise awareness of the contributions that Caribbean
3130 Americans have made to the United States and to celebrate
3231 the rich and diverse cultural and historical influence of
3332 the island nations, including music, food, and traditions;
3433 and
3534 WHEREAS, Caribbean people have been a part of the
3635 history of the United States since its founding as a Nation;
3736 Alexander Hamilton, from Nevis and St. Kitts, was a founding
3837 father and the first Secretary of the Treasury; Jean
3938 Baptiste Point du Sable, from Haiti, was the founder of the
4039 City of Chicago; and Jacob de Cordova, a Jewish Jamaican,
4140 was instrumental in the founding of Waco, Texas; and
4241 WHEREAS, other notable Caribbean people and
4342 descendants of Caribbean immigrants include Harry Belafonte,
4443 Cicely Tyson, Eric Holder, Sheryl Lee Ralph, General Colin
4544 Powell, Shirley Chisolm, Una Clarke, and former Vice
4645 President Kamala Harris, all of whom have contributed to the
4746 nation in the areas of politics, medicine, entertainment,
4847 sports, and many other fields; and
4948 WHEREAS, the Central Alabama Caribbean American

7978 WHEREAS, the Central Alabama Caribbean American
8079 Organization, formed in 2011, shares the culture of the
8180 Caribbean with the people of Alabama; they also serve as a
8281 resource for Caribbean region students who come to Alabama
8382 to continue their education; the organization has awarded 21
8483 scholarships from a host of universities in the state; and
8584 the organization has also received grants from the Alabama
8685 State Council on the Arts; now therefore,
8786 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
8887 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That to honor and celebrate the
8988 contributions of Caribbean Americans, the month of June is
9089 recognized as Caribbean American Heritage Month in the State
9190 of Alabama.
