2726 THE STATE OF ALABAMA.
2827 WHEREAS, on April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson made
2928 history when he stepped onto the field with the Brooklyn
3029 Dodgers as the first African American to play Major League
3130 Baseball in the modern era, breaking the league’s color
3231 barrier and marking a turning point in both the sport and
3332 the American Civil Rights Movement; and
3433 WHEREAS, the Alabama State Legislature is proud to
3534 join Major League Baseball and the Jackie Robinson
3635 Foundation in recognizing and celebrating the life, legacy,
3736 and enduring influence of this baseball giant and American
3837 hero; and
3938 WHEREAS, Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January
4039 31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia, near the Alabama state line,
4140 and would go on to break barriers not only on the baseball
4241 diamond but throughout American society; and
4342 WHEREAS, Robinson's career intersected with Alabama
4443 history, including playing in the Negro Leagues at historic
4544 Rickwood Field in Birmingham, one of the oldest professional
4645 ballparks in the country, which also hosted many other Negro
4746 League and Major League greats; and
4847 WHEREAS, Alabama is proud of its deep baseball roots
4948 and contributions to the Negro Leagues, including legendary

8382 WHEREAS, Jackie Robinson attended the University of
8483 California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he became the school's
8584 first four-sport varsity letter winner, excelling in
8685 football, basketball, track and field, and baseball; and
8786 WHEREAS, Robinson served with distinction in the
8887 United States Army during World War II, rising to the rank
8988 of Second Lieutenant before receiving an honorable
9089 discharge; and
9190 WHEREAS, in 1945, he began his professional career in
9291 the Negro Leagues with the Kansas City Monarchs, and later
9392 that year became the first African American signed to a
9493 Major League organization in the modern era, joining the
9594 Brooklyn Dodgers' minor league affiliate, the Montreal
9695 Royals; and
9796 WHEREAS, in 1947, Robinson broke baseball's color
9897 barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers, was named Rookie of the
9998 Year, and went on to earn National League Most Valuable
10099 Player honors in 1949 and lead his team to a World Series
101100 Championship in 1955; and
102101 WHEREAS, his Hall of Fame career included a .311
103102 batting average, 137 home runs, 734 RBIs, 197 stolen bases,
104103 and leadership on and off the field; and
105104 WHEREAS, Jackie Robinson was inducted into the
106105 Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, and his number, 42, was
107106 permanently retired by every Major League team in 1997 in

139138 WHEREAS, Jackie Robinson's post-baseball career
140139 included breaking barriers in business and media, founding
141140 Black-owned financial institutions, championing civil
142141 rights, and advocating for social and economic justice until
143142 his passing in 1972; and
144143 WHEREAS, since 2004, Major League Baseball has
145144 celebrated Jackie Robinson Day each April 15, and since
146145 2009, every MLB player and coach has worn No. 42 in his
147146 honor on that day; and
148147 WHEREAS, the State of Alabama, in honoring Jackie
149148 Robinson's enduring legacy, affirms its commitment to
150149 equality, inclusion, and the fight against discrimination in
151150 all forms; now therefore,
152151 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
153152 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That April 15, 2025, be
154153 recognized as Jackie Robinson Day in the State of Alabama,
155154 in celebration of his profound contributions to the game of
156155 baseball, to civil rights, and to the betterment of American
157156 society.
158157 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Alabama State
159158 Legislature proudly joins Major League Baseball and the
160159 Jackie Robinson Foundation in acknowledging and honoring
161160 this towering figure whose courage, dignity, and
162161 determination forever changed the face of American sports
163162 and culture.
164163 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
165164 resolution be provided to the Jackie Robinson Foundation,
