26	25		SJR___ RECOGNIZING APRIL 15, 2025, AS JACKIE ROBINSON DAY IN
27	26		THE STATE OF ALABAMA.
28	27		WHEREAS, on April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson made
29	28		history when he stepped onto the field with the Brooklyn
30	29		Dodgers as the first African American to play Major League
31	30		Baseball in the modern era, breaking the league’s color
32	31		barrier and marking a turning point in both the sport and
33	32		the American Civil Rights Movement; and
34	33		WHEREAS, the Alabama State Legislature is proud to
35	34		join Major League Baseball and the Jackie Robinson
36	35		Foundation in recognizing and celebrating the life, legacy,
37	36		and enduring influence of this baseball giant and American
38	37		hero; and
39	38		WHEREAS, Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born on January
40	39		31, 1919, in Cairo, Georgia, near the Alabama state line,
41	40		and would go on to break barriers not only on the baseball
42	41		diamond but throughout American society; and
43	42		WHEREAS, Robinson's career intersected with Alabama
44	43		history, including playing in the Negro Leagues at historic
45	44		Rickwood Field in Birmingham, one of the oldest professional
46	45		ballparks in the country, which also hosted many other Negro
47	46		League and Major League greats; and
48	47		WHEREAS, Alabama is proud of its deep baseball roots
49	48		and contributions to the Negro Leagues, including legendary

80	79		players such as Satchel Paige and Willie Mays, both of whom,
81	80		like Jackie Robinson, used their platforms to challenge
82	81		segregation and pave the way for future generations; and
83	82		WHEREAS, Jackie Robinson attended the University of
84	83		California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he became the school's
85	84		first four-sport varsity letter winner, excelling in
86	85		football, basketball, track and field, and baseball; and
87	86		WHEREAS, Robinson served with distinction in the
88	87		United States Army during World War II, rising to the rank
89	88		of Second Lieutenant before receiving an honorable
90	89		discharge; and
91	90		WHEREAS, in 1945, he began his professional career in
92	91		the Negro Leagues with the Kansas City Monarchs, and later
93	92		that year became the first African American signed to a
94	93		Major League organization in the modern era, joining the
95	94		Brooklyn Dodgers' minor league affiliate, the Montreal
96	95		Royals; and
97	96		WHEREAS, in 1947, Robinson broke baseball's color
98	97		barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers, was named Rookie of the
99	98		Year, and went on to earn National League Most Valuable
100	99		Player honors in 1949 and lead his team to a World Series
101	100		Championship in 1955; and
102	101		WHEREAS, his Hall of Fame career included a .311
103	102		batting average, 137 home runs, 734 RBIs, 197 stolen bases,
104	103		and leadership on and off the field; and
105	104		WHEREAS, Jackie Robinson was inducted into the
106	105		Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962, and his number, 42, was
107	106		permanently retired by every Major League team in 1997 in

139	138		WHEREAS, Jackie Robinson's post-baseball career
140	139		included breaking barriers in business and media, founding
141	140		Black-owned financial institutions, championing civil
142	141		rights, and advocating for social and economic justice until
143	142		his passing in 1972; and
144	143		WHEREAS, since 2004, Major League Baseball has
145	144		celebrated Jackie Robinson Day each April 15, and since
146	145		2009, every MLB player and coach has worn No. 42 in his
147	146		honor on that day; and
148	147		WHEREAS, the State of Alabama, in honoring Jackie
149	148		Robinson's enduring legacy, affirms its commitment to
150	149		equality, inclusion, and the fight against discrimination in
151	150		all forms; now therefore,
152	151		BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
153	152		HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That April 15, 2025, be
154	153		recognized as Jackie Robinson Day in the State of Alabama,
155	154		in celebration of his profound contributions to the game of
156	155		baseball, to civil rights, and to the betterment of American
157	156		society.
158	157		BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Alabama State
159	158		Legislature proudly joins Major League Baseball and the
160	159		Jackie Robinson Foundation in acknowledging and honoring
161	160		this towering figure whose courage, dignity, and
162	161		determination forever changed the face of American sports
163	162		and culture.
164	163		BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
