LIBRARY MONTH IN ARKANSAS. 14

WHEREAS, the American Library Association announced the first National 16
Library Week in 1958 and the fi rst national school library month in 1985; and 17
18
WHEREAS, the first systematically organized library was founded in the 19
7th century B.C. by Assyrian ruler Ashurbanipal in Nineveh, in contemporary 20
Iraq and it contained approximately thirty thousand (30,000) cuneiform 21
tablets sorted by subject; and 22

WHEREAS, libraries are great repositories of knowledge and the goal of 24
libraries is to collect knowledge and distribute it for its use in everyday 25
life; and 26

WHEREAS, libraries are full of stories in a v ariety of formats from 28
picture books to large print, audiobooks to e -books, and more; and 29

WHEREAS, school libraries and librarians provide another space for 31
children to learn and can help students navigate the internet, offer a quiet 32
area for students to study, and encourage students to read; and 33

WHEREAS, as learning becomes virtual and students can access learning 35
media anywhere they have an internet connection, school librarians show the 36 SR47

students how to safely access and use school resources from home or another 1
space that has an internet connection; and 2

WHEREAS, while students are typically the ones utilizing the resources 4
the school library has to offer, well -trained librarians are expert 5
researchers and can provide teachers with research tools and educational 6
resources; and 7

WHEREAS, librarians that work with teachers provide resources to 9
complement lessons in the classroom with displays and other resources in the 10
library; and 11

WHEREAS, the school library can be a hub of communal activity for th e 13
school; and 14

WHEREAS, despite the convenience of the internet, students still like 16
to physically visit a library and spend time among books and other readers; 17
and 18

WHEREAS, this year’s National Library Week will be celebrated with the 20
theme "There's More to the Story", 21

NOW THEREFORE, 23
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY -FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE 24
STATE OF ARKANSAS: 25

THAT the Senate proclaim the month of April as School Library Month in 27
Arkansas. 28
