Overview
Requires rules adopted by the Department of Health Services (DHS) relating to vision screening
services to be done in consultation with the specified nonprofit organizations, health care
professionals and school personnel.
History
DHS adopts rules relating to vision screening. These rules may not require materials and
equipment specific to any one provider and must include feedback from the public education
programs required to implement the vision screenings. DHS vision screening rules must be made
in consultation with the Arizona Department of Education.
Vision Screening means using a vision screening methodology approved or prescribed by rules
adopted by DHS, as age appropriate and that include the evaluation of visual acuity, depth
perception, color vision and refraction.
Vision Screening Services are services that include identifying, testing and evaluating a child's
vision and identifying the need for follow-up services as prescribed by rules adopted by DHS
(A.R.S § 36-899.10).
Provisions
1. Adds that DHS vision screening rules be made in consultation with:
a) Ophthalmologists;
b) Optometrists;
c) School nurses;
d) Pediatricians;
e) School administrators; and
f) Recognized nonprofit organizations that provide free vision screening services, training,
grants for vision screening services, eyeglasses or examinations. (Sec. 1)
