FACT SHEET FOR H.B. 2722

national guard; life insurance
Purpose
Entitles officers and enlisted personnel of the Arizona National Guard to a $10,000 group
life insurance benefit at the state's expense.
Background
Officers and enlisted personnel of the Arizona National Guard who remain on state active
duty for more than 30 consecutive days by order of the Governor or Adjutant General are
considered state employees and are eligible for health and accident insurance benefits, including
dependents. On completing state active duty orders, National Guard members may not continue to
receive health and accident insurance benefits. Qualified national guardsmen, or their spouse or
legal dependent, may also be eligible for tuition reimbursement at a public or private postsecondary
educational institution if they meet outlined criteria (A.R.S. ยงยง 26-158 and 26-179).
If the state is required to pay for costs associated with providing a group life insurance
policy for officers and enlisted personnel of the Arizona National Guard, there may be an impact
to the state General Fund.
Provisions
1. Entitles officers and enlisted personnel of the Arizona National Guard to a $10,000 group life
insurance benefit at the state's expense.

a) to the officer's or personnel's named beneficiary; or
b) pursuant to statute governing intestate succession if there is no named beneficiary.
3. Specifies that the $10,000 life insurance benefit is in addition to any health insurance or
accident benefit provided to guardsmen.
4. Becomes effective on the general effective date.
