 BILL NUMBER: SCR 7AMENDED BILL TEXT AMENDED IN SENATE JANUARY 14, 2009 INTRODUCED BY Senator Denham JANUARY 5, 2009 Relative to kidney cancer. LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST SCR 7, as amended, Denham. Kidney Cancer Awareness Month. This measure would proclaim March 2009 as Kidney Cancer Awareness Month in California. Fiscal committee: no. WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that, each year, more than 54,390 people in the United States are diagnosed with kidney cancer; and WHEREAS, Of those diagnosed with kidney cancer, 33,130 are men, and 21,260 are women; and WHEREAS, More than 100,000 survivors of kidney cancer now live in the United States; and WHEREAS, Kidney cancer is among the 10 most common cancers in both men and women; and WHEREAS, The exact cause of kidney cancer is unknown; and WHEREAS, Kidney cancer has few symptoms and is usually undiagnosed or misdiagnosed until later stages or until it has spread to other areas of the body and becomes harder to treat; and WHEREAS, Other than surgery, the most commonly used treatments for kidney cancer are immunotherapy, radiation, and chemotherapy; and WHEREAS, Breakthroughs in research over the last year have given renewed hope to patients who previously had few treatment options; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature proclaim the month of March 2009 as Kidney Cancer Awareness Month; and be it further Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the National Kidney  Association   Foundation  and to the author for appropriate distribution.
