This measure would recognize the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks as a day of solemn commemoration. Fiscal committee: no. WHEREAS, On the morning of September 11, 2001, American Airlines flight 11 and United Airlines flight 175 were hijacked and crashed into the North Tower and South Tower, respectively, of the World Trade Center in New York City, New York; and WHEREAS, On that same morning, American Airlines Flight 77 was hijacked and crashed into the west wall of the Pentagon; and WHEREAS, At approximately 10:00 a.m. that morning, the passengers and crew of hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 heroically retook control of their airplane, giving their lives to save countless others; and WHEREAS, All four of the hijacked aircraft were bound for California; and WHEREAS, Heroic public safety personnel, first responders, and volunteers responded immediately to the devastation; and WHEREAS, Nearly 3,000 innocent civilians were killed in the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001; and WHEREAS, Over 400 public safety personnel gave their lives in response to those emergencies; and WHEREAS, Nearly 80 of those killed were native Californians or California residents; and WHEREAS, 10 years after the attacks, Californians, Americans and people around the world continue to mourn the tremendous loss of innocent life on that historic day; and WHEREAS, After a decade, the thoughts and prayers of Californians remain with the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks and their families, friends, and loved-ones; and WHEREAS, Assembly Concurrent Resolution 127, authored by Assembly Member Jenny Oropeza in 2002, recognized September 11 of each year as a Day of Remembrance and Service, and called upon Californians to participate in appropriate observances to remember those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks; and WHEREAS, In July 2011, the United States Senate passed Senate Resolution 237 that called upon all the people of the United States to cease all work and observe a moment of remembrance beginning at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on September 11, 2011, in honor of the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks committed against the United States on September 11, 2001; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature of the State of California recognizes September 11, 2011, as a day of solemn commemoration, offers its deepest and most sincere condolences for the friends, families and loved-ones of the innocent victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, and is grateful for the heroic action taken by those who risked and gave their life to save the lives of others; and be it further Resolved, That the State of California reaffirms its commitment to the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, and their loved-ones; and be it further Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
