LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST SB 583, as introduced, Jackson. Family law. Existing law authorizes, except as otherwise provided, the court to direct the trial of an issue of fact joined in a family law proceeding to be private, and to exclude all persons except the officers of the court, the parties, their witnesses, and counsel, when the court considers it necessary in the interests of justice. This bill would make a technical, nonsubstantive change to that provision. Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: no. State-mandated local program: no. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. Section 214 of the Family Code is amended to read: 214. Except as otherwise provided in this code or by court rule, the court may, when it considers it necessary in the interests of justice and the persons involved, direct the trial of  any   an  issue of fact joined in a proceeding under this code to be private, and may exclude all persons except the officers of the court, the parties, their witnesses, and counsel.
