The Legislature finds and declares that through the certification of nanodegrees, returning service members with experience related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the United States Armed Forces can receive rapid paced training meant to expedite their employment and boost statewide employment.SEC. 2. Section 69509.7 is added to the Education Code, to read:69509.7. (a) The California State Approving Agency for Veterans Education shall provide for the certification of nanodegrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concentrations for veterans returning from military service on or after September 11, 2001.(b) For purposes of this section, a nanodegree is a degree for completing a concentrated vocational education program that is one year in duration offered by a California institution of higher education as part of its participation in a veterans education or training program authorized by the federal Higher Education Act (Public Law 89-329).(c) Compliance with this chapter, in and of itself, shall not be construed as satisfying the requirements for participation in programs authorized by the federal Higher Education Act, including, but not limited to, Section 600.9 of Title 34 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
