The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost for appropriate signs, which shall include the star of the California Highway Patrol, showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: YES Bill TextWHEREAS, Officer Nathan Daniel Taylor was born January 17, 1981, to Jeff and Linda in Baltimore, Maryland, and had four siblings: sister, Sarah, and brothers, Karl, Stephen and Colin; andWHEREAS, Officer Taylor graduated from Del Oro High School in Loomis, California, in 1997, and also graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 2006, where he earned a Bachelors Degree in history and Spanish; andWHEREAS, Officer Taylor was a machinist and construction worker before becoming a California Highway Patrol Officer; andWHEREAS, Officer Taylor married his best friend, Rebecca Tanner, in August of 2003, and had three wonderful children: Preston D. (born February 25, 2008), Wyatt C. (born September 20, 2010), and Joshua D. (born March 26, 2013); andWHEREAS, Officer Taylor graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy in 2010, and upon graduation, was assigned to the San Jose Area Office, where he proudly served for more than two years before being transferred to the Gold Run Area on January 31, 2013, and proudly served that area for more than three years; andWHEREAS, Officer Taylor, badge number 20154, was killed in the line of duty on March 13, 2016; andWHEREAS, Officer Taylor was directing traffic at the scene of a previous accident on March 12, 2016, on Interstate 80 (I-80), near Donner Summit when a vehicle suddenly changed lanes and accelerated past slowing traffic. The vehicle struck Officer Taylor, causing him to be thrown into the median. He suffered two broken legs and internal injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following day; andWHEREAS, Officer Taylor is survived by his wife, three sons, parents, and siblings, one of whom is a CHP Officer in the Clear Lake Area; andWHEREAS, Officer Taylor was a hardworking, dedicated officer who loved his job and enjoyed the people he worked with. He was known for his devotion to family and his love of law enforcement. His greatest joys were his wife and children; andWHEREAS, Officer Taylor was admired for his genuine and honest approach both in life and on the job. According to his colleagues, he was the highway patrolmen that everyone strived to become; andWHEREAS, In recognition of Officer Taylors great contributions and sacrifice in serving the California Highway Patrol and the citizens of California, it would be fitting to designate the Interstate 80 overcrossing at Baxter Road in Placer County as the California Highway Patrol Officer Nathan Taylor Memorial Overcrossing in his honor; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the Interstate 80 overcrossing at Baxter Road (Post Mile 46.935) in the Village of Alta in Placer County as the California Highway Patrol Officer Nathan Taylor Memorial Overcrossing; and be it furtherResolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the costs of erecting the appropriate signs, which shall include the star of the California Highway Patrol, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation, and upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering the cost, to erect those signs; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution. |
