Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma Awareness Week.This measure would designate the 4th week of May 2017 as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma Awareness Week, and would encourage all Californians to become more informed about DIPG pediatric brain cancer and the current challenges to the medical research system in designating sufficient research funding for pediatric cancers.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: NO Bill TextWHEREAS, Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) affects 200 to 400 children in the United States each year with certain regularity; andWHEREAS, Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related death in children; and WHEREAS, DIPG is the second most common malignant brain tumor of childhood, and DIPG is the leading cause of childhood death due to brain tumors; and WHEREAS, The median survival time is only nine months after diagnosis with treatment, and five-year survival is less than 1 percent; and WHEREAS, Given the age at diagnosis and the average life expectancy, the number of life years lost annually because of DIPG is approximately 25,000 years of person life lost, which is calculated as the number of children diagnosed by the average of male and female life expectancy from the median age; and WHEREAS, Prognosis has not improved for children with DIPG in over 40 years; andWHEREAS, Government funding for research for pediatric cancer as a singular designation has been represented by less than 4 percent of the National Cancer Institute budget in any given year; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature designates the fourth week of May 2017 as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma Awareness Week; and be it further Resolved, That the Legislature encourages all Californians to become more informed about DIPG pediatric brain cancer and the current challenges to the medical research system in designating sufficient research funding for pediatric cancers; and be it furtherResolved, That the Legislature supports expanded research to better understand DIPG, develop effective treatments, and provide comprehensive care for children with DIPG and their families; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution. |
