Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, On a daily basis we are confronted by the challenge of violence in the form of hate crimes, brutality, domestic abuse, and other forms of inhumanity; andWHEREAS, Violence takes a terrible physical, mental, emotional, and financial toll on society; andWHEREAS, Violence prevention and conflict resolution programs in schools and communities throughout the nation and world are positively affecting our families and our neighborhoods, one day at a time; andWHEREAS, Every person can move the world in the direction of peace through his or her daily nonviolent choices and actions; andWHEREAS, An awareness of nonviolent principles and practices is a powerful way to heal and transform our lives and communities, to recognize the dignity and worth of every human being, and to promote peace and harmony among all people regardless of race, color, culture, class, language, faith, age, gender, sexual preference, or other apparent difference; andWHEREAS, The Season for Nonviolence, a national campaign held January 30 to April 4, inclusive, to mark the memorial anniversaries of noted nonviolent advocates Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., provides an opportunity to educate citizens about nonviolence; andWHEREAS, The annual 64-day campaign, cofounded in 1998 by Dr. Arun Gandhi and the Association for Global New Thought, is an educational, media, and grassroots awareness campaign; andWHEREAS, The purpose of the Season for Nonviolence is to focus education and community action towards attaining peace and justice in the spirit of Gandhi and King; andWHEREAS, The Season for Nonviolence teaches that every person can move the world forward in the direction of peace through daily nonviolent choices and actions. Through media attention, the Season for Nonviolence also recognizes and celebrates those who are using nonviolence to build communities that honor the dignity and worth of every human being; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly proclaims January 30, 2017, to April 4, 2017, inclusive, as the 20th annual Season for Nonviolence, and encourages all citizens to participate in local, national, and global educational and community campaigns to honor those who are using nonviolence to build communities that respect the dignity and worth of every human being; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
