                            Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 103 CHAPTER 60 Relative to California Physical Education Week. The measure also would encourage teachers, school policymakers, and school leaders to provide the highest quality physical education instruction in their schools for all pupils and provide that the week serve as an opportunity for those persons to collaboratively review current instructional practices in physical education and make needed recommendations.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: NO Bill TextWHEREAS, Physical education is an academic discipline that equips our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions they need to build and protect their physical, mental, and social health; andWHEREAS, Physical activity is essential to virtually every facet of life in California, and makes significant contributions to all our citizens, including improved health, longer life, higher academic achievement, improved mental health, and improved quality of life; andWHEREAS, Substantial evidence shows that Californias children and young people are less active now than ever, and the impact of physical education instructional programs is key in building their skills, advancing their knowledge, and contributing to their dispositions for physical activity at all stages of their lives; andWHEREAS, High-quality instruction in physical education also makes significant contributions to state educational priorities, including literacy development, social-emotional learning, school culture, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), technology, and other priorities; andWHEREAS, Physical education is an integral part of a well-rounded education in California and across the nation with its inclusion in the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, contributes to college and career readiness, and leads to productive, healthy, adult lives; andWHEREAS, The State Board of Education adopted both the Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public Schools: Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve and the Physical Education Framework for California Public Schools: Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve to communicate what our pupils should know and be able to do at each grade level, and to provide guidance for our school leaders and teachers to take the necessary steps in implementing high-quality physical education programs for all pupils; andWHEREAS, High-quality physical education programs provide each of our pupils with the opportunity to learn, to have their skills and knowledge evaluated, and to build value for including physical activity into their lives each day. Further, this instruction is built on sound policies, delivered by appropriately credentialed teachers, and focuses on pupil success in learning; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That May 1, 2018, to May 7, 2018, inclusive, be declared as California Physical Education Week, to coincide with National Physical Education and Sport Week, in an effort to promote high-quality physical education instruction for all of our pupils; and be it further Resolved, That all teachers, all school policymakers, and all school leaders be encouraged to provide the highest quality physical education instruction in their schools for all pupils, and that California Physical Education Week in 2018 serve as an opportunity for teachers, policymakers, and leaders to collaboratively review current instructional practices in physical education and make the needed recommendations to enhance the quality of physical education instruction for all of Californias pupils; and be it furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
