California Wildlife Day.This measure would proclaim the Spring Equinox of every year as California Wildlife Day.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: NO Bill TextWHEREAS, California is a leader in environmental conservation and is enriched with a diverse and unique range of ecosystems and wildlife; and WHEREAS, Nature and wilderness have the ability to inspire and teach us and contribute to the foundation of our culture, our society, and our economy, as well as provide for our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being; and WHEREAS, Millions of Californians are deeply grateful to live in this state because of the flora and fauna and the wonderful opportunities it offers to experience and learn about nature; and WHEREAS, Numerous state and nonprofit organizations encourage public awareness and participation in wildlife and habitat conservation, restoration, and preservation efforts; and WHEREAS, Nature and wilderness are being threatened by air, water, and soil pollution, exploitation and development, and increasing numbers of species are becoming endangered and extinct; and WHEREAS, Many statewide student nature programs deserve a day to recognize wildlife in their studies and achievements; and WHEREAS, An opportunity to promote nature and its benefits for underprivileged urban and suburban youth is needed; and WHEREAS, In 2005, National Wildlife Day was established to carry forward the memory of conservationist Steve Irwin and serves to bring awareness to the number of nationally and globally endangered animals that need to be preserved, as well as to acknowledge animal sanctuaries and organizations and to educate the public about conservation; and WHEREAS, On December 20, 2013, the United Nations declared March 3 as United Nations World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the worlds wild animals and plants; and WHEREAS, The United Nations selected March 3 as United Nations World Wildlife Day because it was on this day that the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora was signed a multilateral treaty to protect endangered plants and animals; and WHEREAS, Groups, communities, and individuals will all be able to celebrate California Wildlife Day; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby proclaims the Spring Equinox of every year as California Wildlife Day; and be it further Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
