This measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: YES Bill TextWHEREAS, Vicente Fernndez was born in the town of Huentitn El Alto, Jalisco, Mxico, on February 17, 1940; andWHEREAS, Vicente Chente Fernndez has been recognized and honored for his accomplishments in the world of music and television; andWHEREAS, In a career spanning five decades, Vicente Fernndez has been awarded every honor and accolade in the entertainment world and beyond, having been recognized with lifetime achievement awards, hall of fame honors, and even a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; andWHEREAS, With his trademark charro outfit, wide sombrero, and impeccable backing mariachi ensemble, he has performed on the worlds biggest and most prestigious stages, headlining everywhere from Mexico Citys Auditorio Nacional and the Plaza de Toros Mxico to New York Citys Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, and our very own Pico Rivera Sports Arena; andWHEREAS, In 1976, Vicente Fernndez recorded one of his most famous ballads, Volver Volver, that would break sales records by the end of 1976 and would be played countless times in Spanish-speaking homes across the United States and Mxico; andWHEREAS, In a career that spans over five decades, Vicente Fernndez has accumulated an impressive number of awards both American and Mexican, including 8 Latin Grammys, 2 Grammys, and 14 Premios Lo Nuestro, all while recording 100 albums, and selling nearly 70 million copies; andWHEREAS, Vicente Fernndez is considered the greatest all-time Mexican singer, and as a world-class singer he continues to be prolific, influential, and ultimately a critical player responsible for shaping the growth and development of the modern ranchera genre; andWHEREAS, For his artistic integrity, his tireless dedication, and unending enthusiasm, Vicente Fernndez will be noted in the history books as one of the most fundamental and influential pioneers of ranchera music and a towering figure in the evolution of regional Mexican music and advancing the mastery of mariachi; andWHEREAS, The Pico Rivera Sports Arena in Senate District 32 has been a long-time second home for Vicente Fernndez, where his fans have established bonds of personal affection, respect, and admiration for his performance skills and his devotion to the culture, history, and music of Mxico; andWHEREAS, Both the Pico Rivera Sports Arena and Vicente Fernndez share a love and admiration for Mexican cultural life and traditions in the community; andWHEREAS, Vicente Fernndez has performed at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena on many occasions, further promoting regional Mexican music to the masses in the area and throughout the United States, accompanied by several world-renowned mariachi ensembles that have been impacted by his influence in their careers; andWHEREAS, Vicente Fernndez influence extends beyond Pico Rivera to the preservation of regional Mexican music broadly, generating the energy which has resulted in the establishment of many California City Youth Mariachi programs, including in the Cities of Baldwin Park, Pico Rivera, Norwalk, and San Fernando, to name a few; andWHEREAS, On September 17, 2002, he was named Person of the Year by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the producers of the Latin Grammys, paying tribute to his artistic achievements and his support of the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of State Highway 605 from Peck Road to Rose Hills Road in the County of Los Angeles as the Vicente Fernndez Highway to commend and thank Vicente Fernndez, El Rey, for all his years in the entertainment industry and for his musical contributions to not only Mxico, but to the world; and be it furtherResolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
