Armed Forces of the United States: active duty and retired military personnel.This measure would honor the men and women who have served or are serving in our nations military, and would declare that the men and women who choose to join the United States Armed Forces should be encouraged and commended.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: NO Bill TextWHEREAS, The United States Armed Forces are integral to protecting our freedom, security, and prosperity; andWHEREAS, The men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces display a deep commitment to our country through their courage, sacrifice, and sense of duty; andWHEREAS, The United States Armed Forces foster the potential of enlistees and officer candidates to produce intelligent, talented leaders who bear a conscientious obligation to serve; andWHEREAS, An overwhelming number of Active Duty Enlisted Members (91.6 percent) have a high school diploma and some college experience; andWHEREAS, The vast majority (83.8 percent) of officers have at least a bachelors degree, and 41.5 percent of officers have an advanced degree; andWHEREAS, The percentage of Active Duty Members who are married is 54.3 percent and 41.2 percent of all military personnel are parents; andWHEREAS, California has the highest amount of Selected Reserve members of any state, and over 97 percent of them have at least a high school diploma; andWHEREAS, The California National Guard currently has over 23,000 service members, most of whom have other careers while they serve; andWHEREAS, Twenty-six Presidents of the United States were veterans of the United States Armed Forces; andWHEREAS, Nationally, in 2016, 1,040 of the 7,383 state legislators, 20 percent of United States Senators, and 18 percent of United States Representatives, were veterans; andWHEREAS, There are currently an estimated 20 million living American veterans, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs; and WHEREAS, The quantity of 3,517 Medals of Honor, the Nations highest decoration, have been awarded to United States veterans for courage and sacrifice above and beyond the call of duty in the line of fire defending the nation; andWHEREAS, Military retirees are dedicated, focused, well trained, well disciplined, and well educated and bring their best qualities of United States citizenship to lifelong service within the United States and their local communities as stable, responsible citizens and neighbors; andWHEREAS, Those qualities often result in contributions to the civilian workforce as experienced and dedicated employees, to local educational institutions as teachers, counselors, and coaches, to local government as elected public servants, and to communities as effective volunteers; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature honors the men and women who have served or are serving in our nations military; and be it furtherResolved, That the Legislature declares that men and women who choose to join the United States Armed Forces should be encouraged and commended; and be it furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
