Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, The telecommunications personnel in the public safety community work at local public safety answering points (PSAP) and 911 call centers throughout the state, serving the people of California 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, each day of every year; andWHEREAS, Public safety telecommunicators often serve people at their lowest moments, during a crisis or emergency, giving comfort, direction, and hope; andWHEREAS, Public safety telecommunicators are the unsung heroes who answer calls from those in danger and stay on the line until police arrive; who, when contacted by neighbors about local fires, remain at their post to direct incoming firetrucks; and who, with courage and calm, render these and countless other essential and lifesaving services; andWHEREAS, In the United States, an estimated 240 million calls are made to 911 each year, all answered by these amazing individuals; andWHEREAS, In 1981, Patricia Anderson, of the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office, originated the idea for a public safety telecommunicators week; andWHEREAS, The second full week of April is now recognized nationwide as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, a week for thanking and recognizing public safety communicators throughout the county; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate recognizes the week of April 8 through April 14, 2018, as California Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and encourages all Californians to join the Senate in celebrating and thanking those public safety telecommunicators who have dedicated their lives to serving the public; and be it furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
