Digest Key Fiscal Committee: NO Bill TextWHEREAS, Taekwondo is a nonaggressive system of self-defense and self-discipline that has become one of the worlds most popular and successful martial arts while preserving the culture and traditions of the Korean people; andWHEREAS, Officially developed as a unified style of martial arts in the 1950s, the roots of Taekwondo stretch back nearly 5,000 years, incorporating elements of many traditional Korean martial arts; andWHEREAS, As a martial arts style, Taekwondo is characterized by head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, fast kicks, and other techniques; andWHEREAS, Students swear an oath to respect coaches and superiors, to stand up for freedom and justice, to cooperate in the creation of a more peaceful world, and to never misuse Taekwondo; andWHEREAS, Taekwondo cultivates mental strength as well as physical fitness and teaches students to use knowledge and internal power; and WHEREAS, Students learn the Taekwondo tenets of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit; andWHEREAS, Taekwondo was featured as a demonstration event at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, and since 2000, Taekwondo has been one of only two Asian martial arts included as a medal event in the Olympic Games; andWHEREAS, On September 4, 1994, Taekwondo was adopted as an official sport of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, at the 103rd International Olympic Committee Session in Paris, France; and WHEREAS, Taekwondo is one of the most systematic and scientific Korean traditional martial arts that teaches more than physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spirit and life through training our body and mind. Today, it has become a global sport that has gained an international reputation, and stands among the official games in the Olympic Games; andWHEREAS, Men and women of all ages, races, and creeds throughout the California build strong character and pursue self-fulfillment through good discipline by practicing Taekwondo; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates September 4, 2020, and the same date in each year thereafter, as Taekwondo Day in California; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit a copy of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly post the designation of this day on the Assemblys internet website.
