World Autism Awareness Day.
The measure aims to increase public awareness of autism by reminding residents of the significant prevalence of ASD, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which indicates that approximately 1 in 59 children are affected by this disorder. By proclaiming this day, the state government seeks to foster understanding and inclusivity for children with autism, ensuring that they are afforded dignity and advocates for their rights as stipulated by various international conventions on the rights of persons with disabilities.
Assembly Concurrent Resolution No. 188, introduced by Assembly Member Chau, aims to recognize April 2, 2020, as World Autism Awareness Day in California. This resolution aligns with the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 62/139, which encourages member states to promote awareness and understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The adoption of this day serves to highlight the challenges faced by individuals with autism and to advocate for their rights and the need for ongoing support from society.
Although the resolution is largely ceremonial and seeks to promote awareness and understanding, there may be varying perspectives on the state government's role in addressing the needs of individuals with autism. Some may argue that awareness days are insufficient without accompanying action plans that offer tangible support and resources for families affected by ASD. Nonetheless, proponents believe that awareness is a critical first step toward facilitating more comprehensive support and services for those with autism.
