The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and the badge of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.Digest Key Fiscal Committee: YES Bill TextWHEREAS, Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Jack Williams was shot and killed on Tuesday, May 29, 1979, in the City of La Puente when he was attempting to serve a search warrant on a drug trafficker; and WHEREAS, The men and women of law enforcement have the daunting task of guaranteeing the publics safety, and it is as difficult and dangerous as it is critically important, as evidenced by the death of Deputy Williams, Badge Number 3585, who was killed in the line of duty; andWHEREAS, Deputy Williams heroically volunteered to take the front door entry in serving the search warrant; andWHEREAS, Deputy Williams was shot and killed with a shotgun fired by the drug trafficker as he entered the location; andWHEREAS, Deputy Williams was only 35 years of age at the time of his passing, and had served 9 years, one month, and 20 days since his appointment as a deputy sheriff on April 8, 1970; and WHEREAS, Even today, more than 40 years since his passing, Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Jack Williams is remembered by his fellow officers, colleagues, friends, and surviving family and loved ones who honor his memory annually and recall the inspirational figure he served in each of their lives; and WHEREAS, It is appropriate to pause and honor Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Jack Williams, who made the ultimate sacrifice while performing his sworn duty, and to pay tribute to him, a fallen hero, by recalling his devotion, celebrating his life, and honoring his service; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of Interstate 605 between Alondra Boulevard and Rosecrans Avenue in the County of Los Angeles as the Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Jack Williams Memorial Highway; and be it further Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system showing this special designation and the badge of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, and upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
