Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, California is home to a growing number of older adults who enrich our communities through their diverse life experiences; andWHEREAS, The Public Policy Institute of California estimates that Californias older adult population will nearly double by 2030, an increase of 4 million people over 65 years of age; andWHEREAS, More and more older adults are making a positive impact in California as volunteers, employers, employees, educators, mentors, advocates, and more, offering insight and experience that benefit the state as a whole; andWHEREAS, California is committed to strengthening its communities by connecting with and supporting older adults, their families, and caregivers, and acknowledging their many valuable contributions to society; andWHEREAS, The Senate recognizes the importance of bringing together all generations and engaging in activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being for the benefit of all Californians; andWHEREAS, California can enhance the lives of older adults in our communities by promoting home- and community-based services that support independent living, involving older adults in community events and other activities, and providing opportunities for older adults to work, volunteer, learn, lead, and mentor; andWHEREAS, Every year in May, Older Americans Month recognizes the contributions of older adults across the nation; andWHEREAS, President Gerald Ford first proclaimed Older Americans Month in 1976; andWHEREAS, This years Older Americans Month theme is Connect, Create, Contribute, encouraging older adults to connect with family, friends, and local services and resources, create through activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment, and contribute time, talent, and life experiences to benefit others; andWHEREAS, Older Americans Month also serves to raise awareness concerning elder abuse and neglect; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate declares May 2019 as Older Americans Month to increase public awareness of the many contributions and positive impacts of older adults in the State of California; and be it furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the Governor, the Director of the California Department of Aging, the California State Library, the State Archives, and the author for appropriate distribution.
