The movement encompassed a longstanding, nonviolent struggle against the British that culminated in the establishment of Sri Lankas first parliament; andWHEREAS, Sri Lankas robust democracy has seen a myriad of successes, including the election of the first democratically elected female head of state in 1960, Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike; as well as providing universal, free access to government-provided health care services, a constitutional right to free education, and becoming the only South Asian country to be rated high on the human development index; andWHEREAS, Sri Lankan Independence Day is one of the most significant annual events for the nation, serving to honor and celebrate the diversity of Sri Lankan peoples who hail from various ethnic and religious backgrounds comprising the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka today; andWHEREAS, Sri Lankan Independence Day is marked by various celebrations, including the lighting of the oil lamp ceremony. The lighting of the oil lamp is one of the most integral traditions of Sri Lanka; the oil lamp symbolizes human life, and the flame of the lamp symbolizes an unwavering constant of virtues central to Sri Lankan culture. Following the lamp ceremony, flags are hoisted at Independence Square, succeeded by an Independence Day parade through Colombo; andWHEREAS, The Sri Lankan flag represents the three main demographics in Sri Lanka; maroon for the Sinhalese, orange for Sri Lankan Tamils, and green for Sri Lankan Muslims. The flag of Sri Lanka signals and celebrates the countrys ethnoreligious diversity and multinationalism; andWHEREAS, the President of Sri Lanka commemorates Independence Day with an esteemed annual address to the nation, including a two-minute period of silence to honor fallen veterans in the Sri Lankan Civil war; andWHEREAS, Sri Lankan Independence Day seeks to uphold Sri Lankas rich cultural heritage and sonorous history, recognize the tragedies of the civil war and promote a spirit of coexistence and harmony moving forward; andWHEREAS, The local community of people in California who hail from Sri Lanka, or who have ancestral ties to Sri Lanka, continually demonstrate the greatness and beauty of their homeland, and their contributions are notable and reflect success in many industries and community activism; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby recognizes February 4, 2022, as Sri Lankan Independence Day, and urges all Californians to join in celebrating Sri Lankas independence; and be it furtherResolved,That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
