Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, Overdose Awareness Week is recognized by the federal government of the United States of America in order to address the overdose epidemic and enhance support for individuals facing substance use disorder; andWHEREAS, According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in November of 2021, more than 100,000 Americans died of drug overdoses during the year-long period that ended in April of 2021; andWHEREAS, The State Department of Public Health reported 5,502 deaths related to opioid overdose in 2020 in California; andWHEREAS, The State Department of Public Health reported nearly 15 million prescriptions for opioids in 2020 in California; andWHEREAS, Of the 1,500 people that died on the streets of Los Angeles during the COVID-19 pandemic, 40 percent died due to drug or alcohol overdose, according to the University of California Los Angeles Luskin Institute; andWHEREAS, Deaths involving drug overdose have increased exponentially in the past 10 years, with fentanyl overdose deaths increasing by 858 percent from 82 in 2012 to 786 in 2018; andWHEREAS, Cocaine and psychostimulant-involved overdose deaths disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minority groups; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly recognizes the week of August 29, 2022, as Overdose Awareness Week in order to commemorate those individuals who have lost their lives due to overdose and to support the people and their families currently struggling with substance use disorder; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
