LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGESTHR 88, as introduced, Gipson. Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, SCN2A-related disorders affect patients in a wide spectrum ranging from severe, life-threatening conditions to intellectual disability, depending on where on the gene it has changed or mutated; andWHEREAS, The FamilieSCN2A Foundation started in 2015 with less than 100 families, and now represents over 1,000 families from around the globe; andWHEREAS, The FamilieSCN2A Foundation offers direct support to the families affected by this devastating disorder and is the largest nongovernment funding source for SCN2A research through grassroots fundraising; andWHEREAS, SCN2A-related disorders are a leading single-gene cause of childhood epilepsy, intellectual disability, and autism spectrum disorder; andWHEREAS, In addition to seizures and autism, SCN2A-related disorders are also associated with a spectrum of symptoms including sleep disturbances, GI dysfunction, movement disorders, pain, and dysautonomia; and WHEREAS, It is predicted that 11.1 in 100,000 or approximately 1 in 9,000 will be diagnosed with SCN2A-related disorders; andWHEREAS, SCN2A is a powerful research model that can lead to discoveries that treat ALL children with autism spectrum disorder; andWHEREAS, The State of California is leading the way for SCN2A research, including the discovery of how the dysfunction of SCN2A results in autism spectrum disorder; andWHEREAS, Although SCN2A-related disorders can be easily identified by DNA testing, these disorders frequently go undetected due to the lack of awareness about the syndrome, even within the medical community; andWHEREAS, SCN2A is a critical gene for the brain throughout the life, not just in early development. This opens the door to the idea that treatments may be effective even if administered later in life; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly hereby recognizes February 24 as SCN2A National Awareness Day, and encourages everyone to wear purple, blue, or green on this day to help spread global awareness of the FamilieSCN2A Foundations vision to find a cure for SCN2A-related disorders; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
