Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a developmental condition that affects the social, communication, and behavioral skills of individuals based on where on the autism spectrum they find themselves; andWHEREAS, More than 5.4 million American adults are within the autism spectrum; andWHEREAS, More children are being diagnosed on the autism spectrum than ever before with diagnoses as high as 1 in 54 children nationally; andWHEREAS, Increasing rates can be partly attributed to the improvement over the years on diagnostic resources as a result of increased awareness; andWHEREAS, Individuals within the autism spectrum often require specialized support and community support services to ensure their health and safety, with struggles arising due to lack of sufficient resources; andWHEREAS, It is important to build an inclusive and aware environment for all people, including those with autism, to fuel diversity and success on all facets of society; andWHEREAS, Highlighting April as Autism Awareness Month would give students, educators, and families an opportunity to effectively uplift and inspire those in their communities within the autism spectrum so that they feel proud and empowered while seeking increased resources and awareness; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the Senate designates the month of April 2021 as Autism Awareness Month and encourages residents to show support for autism awareness; and be it furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
