Digest KeyBill TextWHEREAS, Stomach cancer is among the cancers with the lowest five-year survival rate; andWHEREAS, Forty-two percent of patients diagnosed with stomach cancer die in the first year; andWHEREAS, Stomach cancer patients diagnosed at stage IV have a 6 percent five-year survival rate; andWHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 26,380 new cases of stomach cancer in 2022; andWHEREAS, Young patients diagnosed with stomach cancer have a much shorter survival time compared to the elderly, with an average survival time of about 10.3 months; andWHEREAS, The five-year relative survival rate for stomach cancer is 32 percent, and stomach cancer mortality rates have only moderately improved over the past 30 years; andWHEREAS, Stomach cancer is the fifth most common cancer and third deadliest cancer globally; andWHEREAS, In 2014, $1.8 billion was spent on care of stomach cancer patients in the United States; andWHEREAS, The National Cancer Institute invested only $14,800,000 to fund stomach cancer research in 2019; andWHEREAS, Early detection is the key to surviving stomach cancer; andWHEREAS, Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer, a little-known inherited form of stomach cancer, carries up to an 80 percent risk that an individual will be diagnosed with stomach cancer 80 years of age; andWHEREAS, Lifestyle changes, such as smoking cessation, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and maintaining a healthy weight, can potentially reduce the risk of stomach cancer; andWHEREAS, Better patient and health care provider education is needed for the timely recognition of stomach cancer risks and symptoms; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Senate of the State of California, That the month of November 2022 is designated Stomach Cancer Awareness Month in the State of California; and be it furtherResolved, That the Senate encourages the people of the State of California and interested groups to observe and support November 2022 as Stomach Cancer Awareness Month through appropriate programs and activities to promote public awareness of, and potential treatments for, stomach cancer; and be if furtherResolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.

WHEREAS, Stomach cancer is among the cancers with the lowest five-year survival rate; and
