Trump, survived an assassination attempt while addressing a crowd at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania; andWHEREAS, At the time of the assassination attempt, it was days before the Republican National Convention and former President Trump was the presumptive presidential nominee of the party; andWHEREAS, The would-be assassin, armed with a rifle, fired multiple rounds from the roof of a nearby building before he was neutralized by the United States Secret Service; andWHEREAS, former President Trump was wounded in the assassination attempt and avoided being fatally struck by mere inches; andWHEREAS, Corey Comperatore, a husband, father, decorated firefighter, and veteran, was killed in the attack while heroically protecting his family; and WHEREAS, Two other rally-goers were critically wounded in the assassination attempt; andWHEREAS, Former President Trump, despite his injuries, addressed the nation shortly after the incident, reinforcing the need for unity and peace; andWHEREAS, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., in a news conference following the incident, condemned the violence and called for a reduction in heated political rhetoric, emphasizing the importance of resolving political differences peacefully; and WHEREAS, The increase in threats against public officials highlights a troubling trend of political violence that undermines the principles of democracy and the rule of law; now, therefore, be itResolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly condemns the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on the former President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and all forms of political violence; and be it furtherResolved, That the Assembly calls for renewed efforts to foster a political environment based on respectful discourse and nonviolence; and be it furtherResolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution. |
