Although many Americans suffer from individual symptoms, they do not realize it is a medical condition called IBS, and for this reason it often goes undiagnosed by physicians and patients; and WHEREAS, The symptoms of IBS affect up to 20 percent of the population, or just over 35,000,000 Americans. The quality of life is significantly lower in people suffering from the symptoms of IBS than in healthy people; and WHEREAS, Although IBS has a considerable impact on personal relationships and working practices, people with these symptoms often suffer in silence because of their reluctance to discuss their pain; and WHEREAS, A number of California organizations, including the IBS Patient Support Group, are committed to supporting people suffering from the symptoms of IBS, including by raising public awareness, discovering innovative therapies, and providing patient educational materials; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby declares April 19, 2025, as World IBS Day and encourages all residents of the state to support and participate in organizations, events, and activities that raise awareness about IBS; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.

WHEREAS, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder of gut-brain interaction that is characterized by recurring abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel movements. Although many Americans suffer from individual symptoms, they do not realize it is a medical condition called IBS, and for this reason it often goes undiagnosed by physicians and patients; and
