7-ONCERNING THE DESIGNATION OF THE AGARICUS JULIUS MUSHROOM AS
8-THE STATE MUSHROOM

10-Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Colorado:
11-SECTION 1. Legislative declaration. (1) The general assembly
12-finds and declares that:
13-(a) Mushrooms and fungi play an important role in maintaining the
14-health of forests and ecosystems.
15-(b) Agaricus julius is an edible mushroom found in the Rocky
16-Mountains of Colorado.
17-(c) After mistaking Agaricus julius for its close relative Agaricus
18-augustus, or "The Prince mushroom," scientists first identified Agaricus
19-julius as a distinct species and described it as such in Colorado in 2016.
20-NOTE: This bill has been prepared for the signatures of the appropriate legislative
21-officers and the Governor. To determine whether the Governor has signed the bill
22-or taken other action on it, please consult the legislative status sheet, the legislative
23-history, or the Session Laws.

29-(d) Agaricus julius is a saprobic mushroom, meaning it decomposes
30-dead or decaying organic material, thereby recycling nutrients and reducing
31-wildfire fuel loads.
32-(e) Agaricus julius appears in high-elevation spruce-fir forests and
33-has a large cap adorned with brown scales and an odor reminiscent of
34-almonds.
35-(f) The inclusion of a symbol from the kingdom of fungi will help
36-promote and celebrate the importance of fungi and mushrooms in Colorado.
37-(2) It is therefore the intent of the general assembly that the
38-Agaricus julius mushroom be added to the array of symbols that
39-demonstrate our state character and pride.
40-SECTION 2. In Colorado Revised Statutes, add 24-80-916 as
41-follows:

49-takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on the day following the expiration of the
50-ninety-day period after final adjournment of the general assembly; except
51-that, if a referendum petition is filed pursuant to section 1 (3) of article V
52-of the state constitution against this act or an item, section, or part of this act
53-within such period, then the act, item, section, or part will not take effect
54-unless approved by the people at the general election to be held in
55-PAGE 2-HOUSE BILL 25-1091 November 2026 and, in such case, will take effect on the date of the official
56-declaration of the vote thereon by the governor.
