AFETY AWARENESS MONTH".102
WHEREAS, The month of May marks the traditional start of the1
motorcycle riding season; and2
WHEREAS, Motorcycles occupy a significant place in Colorado3
and American history, having made contributions to numerous military4
campaigns, law enforcement operations, and the culture of the American5
West; and6
WHEREAS, Over 8 million motorcycles are registered in the7
United States, with over 200,000 registered in Colorado, and are used on8
public roads and highways, providing reliable day-to-day transportation9
and recreational opportunities; and10

impact on our highways, motorcycles should be encouraged as a viable2
transportation alternative; and3
WHEREAS, Motorcycles take up less space on our highways and4
parking areas thus reducing traffic congestion; and5
WHEREAS, Motorcyclists are provided legal access to federally6
funded High Occupancy Vehicle lanes to increase traffic flow while7
giving motorcyclists a safer environment for travel; and8
WHEREAS, Riders and passengers of motorcycles face countless9
hazards and unforeseen circumstances on the road; and10
WHEREAS, 162 motorcyclists were killed on Colorado roadways11
last year; and12
WHEREAS, State and national "Share the Road" campaigns have13
been created to remind drivers of other vehicles and all motorists to be14
extra alert in order to increase motorcyclists' safety; and15
WHEREAS, Studies show that many motorcyclists involved in16
accidents were without formal rider training; and17
WHEREAS, Many causes of motorcycle crashes may be attributed18
to lack of experience or failure to appreciate the unique operating19
characteristics and limitations of motorcycles, as well as the failure of20
other motorists to share the road with motorcyclists; and21
WHEREAS, The motorcycling community has made an ongoing22
commitment to increasing awareness of appropriate safety measures and23
increased participation in rider-training programs; and24
WHEREAS, Many rider-training programs are offered throughout25
Colorado, both for beginner and experienced riders to prepare them to26
operate a motorcycle in the safest possible manner; and27
WHEREAS, Rider education, training, and motorcycle awareness28
are important steps in motorcycle accident prevention; now, therefore,29
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Seventy-fifth30

-2- General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein:1
That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly,2
recognize and designate May 2025 as "Motorcycle Safety Awareness3
Month" to promote safety for all motorcycle riders through education and4
training and to encourage all motorists to "share the road" in Colorado.5
Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent6
to ABATE of Colorado.7
