1515 WHEREAS, The month of May marks the traditional start of the1

1717 WHEREAS, Motorcycles occupy a significant place in Colorado3
1818 and American history, having made contributions to numerous military4
1919 campaigns, law enforcement operations, and the culture of the American5

2121 WHEREAS, Over 8 million motorcycles are registered in the7
2222 United States, with over 200,000 registered in Colorado, and are used on8
2323 public roads and highways, providing reliable day-to-day transportation9
2424 and recreational opportunities; and10

4640 impact on our highways, motorcycles should be encouraged as a viable2
4741 transportation alternative; and3
4842 WHEREAS, Motorcycles take up less space on our highways and4
4943 parking areas thus reducing traffic congestion; and5
5044 WHEREAS, Motorcyclists are provided legal access to federally6
5145 funded High Occupancy Vehicle lanes to increase traffic flow while7
5246 giving motorcyclists a safer environment for travel; and8
5347 WHEREAS, Riders and passengers of motorcycles face countless9
5448 hazards and unforeseen circumstances on the road; and10
5549 WHEREAS, 162 motorcyclists were killed on Colorado roadways11
5650 last year; and12
5751 WHEREAS, State and national "Share the Road" campaigns have13
5852 been created to remind drivers of other vehicles and all motorists to be14
5953 extra alert in order to increase motorcyclists' safety; and15
6054 WHEREAS, Studies show that many motorcyclists involved in16
6155 accidents were without formal rider training; and17
6256 WHEREAS, Many causes of motorcycle crashes may be attributed18
6357 to lack of experience or failure to appreciate the unique operating19
6458 characteristics and limitations of motorcycles, as well as the failure of20
6559 other motorists to share the road with motorcyclists; and21
6660 WHEREAS, The motorcycling community has made an ongoing22
6761 commitment to increasing awareness of appropriate safety measures and23
6862 increased participation in rider-training programs; and24
6963 WHEREAS, Many rider-training programs are offered throughout25
7064 Colorado, both for beginner and experienced riders to prepare them to26
7165 operate a motorcycle in the safest possible manner; and27
7266 WHEREAS, Rider education, training, and motorcycle awareness28
7367 are important steps in motorcycle accident prevention; now, therefore,29
7468 Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Seventy-fifth30

7670 -2- General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein:1
7771 That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly,2
7872 recognize and designate May 2025 as "Motorcycle Safety Awareness3
7973 Month" to promote safety for all motorcycle riders through education and4
8074 training and to encourage all motorists to "share the road" in Colorado.5
8175 Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent6
8276 to ABATE of Colorado.7
