WHEREAS, Commissioner Lewis "Lew" Leon Gaiter III was born1
to Sandra and Lew Gaiter Jr., in Denver, Colorado, on November 21,2
1959; and3
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gaiter grew up in Littleton, Colorado,4
graduating from Littleton High School in 1977, and attended Colorado5
State University for two years before starting his career in the computer6
industry; and7
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gaiter married his wife, Jeannette, on8

WHEREAS, During his career as a software engineer,3
Commissioner Gaiter worked for companies, including Spectralogic,4
Hewlett-Packard, United Airlines, and Colorado State University and ran5
his own business, StarFire Enterprises; and6
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Larimer County,7
Commissioner Gaiter was first appointed as the Larimer County8
Commissioner representing District 1 in a vacancy election in January9
2010 and was elected to the same position in November 2010 and10
reelected in November 2014, going on to serve for eight years; and11
WHEREAS, As a dedicated public servant, Commissioner Gaiter12
served as chair of the Larimer County Board of Commissioners and13
president of Colorado Counties, Inc., among many other roles; and14
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gaiter was credited with promoting15
rural broadband access, helping to develop a five-year strategic plan, and16
supporting economic development work; and17
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gaiter was an active member of the18
Loveland Volunteer Ski Patrol for twenty-five years and a passionate19
Denver Broncos fan and participated in the boards of various nonprofit20
organizations, including Christian Home Educators of Colorado and21
Realities for Children; and22
WHEREAS, After a long battle with a rare blood cancer,23
Commissioner Gaiter passed away peacefully on September 18, 2018,24
with his wife, Jeannette, and other family members by his side; and25
WHEREAS, Commissioner Gaiter is remembered as "a man of26
great dedication to his work, strong faith, integrity, and courage"; now,27
therefore,28
Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the Seventy-fifth29
General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the Senate concurring herein:30
(1)  That the portion of Colorado State Highway 1 in Larimer31
County from East County Road 60 to Interstate 25 be designated as the32
"Commissioner Lew Gaiter III Memorial Highway".33

-2- (2)  That the Colorado Department of Transportation may accept1
and expend gifts, grants, and donations for the purpose of the initial2
placement of signs to mark the portion of Colorado State Highway 1 in3
Larimer County from East County Road 60 to Interstate 25 as the4
"Commissioner Lew Gaiter III Memorial Highway".5
(3)  That the Colorado Department of Transportation may explore6
a cooperative agreement with the Board of County Commissioners for7
Larimer County for the maintenance of the signs marking the8
"Commissioner Lew Gaiter III Memorial Highway".9
Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent10
to Jeannette Gaiter, Sandra Gaiter, Jon Gaiter, Micah Gaiter, Elijah11
Gaiter, Sam Gaiter, Lewis Gaiter, Daniel Gaiter, Josiah Gaiter, Kim12
Kegu, and Lorenda Volker.13
