Proposed Bill No. 6062

January Session, 2011

LCO No. 815

Referred to Committee on Judiciary

Introduced by:

REP. KIRKLEY-BEY, 5th Dist.

AN ACT ELIMINATING MANDATORY MINIMUM SENTENCES.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

That the general statutes be amended to eliminate the requirement that a court, upon the conviction of a person for certain offenses, impose a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment that may not be suspended or reduced.

Statement of Purpose:

To establish sentencing equity in the criminal justice system by eliminating all mandatory minimum sentences because such sentences disproportionately affect persons of color in the inner cities and contribute to overcrowding in the prisons.
