January Session, 2015

LCO No. 1014

Referred to Committee on GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATION AND ELECTIONS

Introduced by:

REP. JANOWSKI, 56th Dist.

AN ACT CONCERNING POLITICAL SIGNS ON STATE RIGHTS-OF-WAY.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

That chapter 155 of the general statutes be amended to (1) require a committee, as defined in section 9-601 of the general statutes, to obtain the approval of the Department of Transportation in accordance with section 13a-123 of the general statutes prior to erecting any sign of two feet by four feet or larger on any state right-of-way, (2) impose a fine of one hundred fifty dollars per sign for any wilful violation of such requirement, and (3) permit the Department of Transportation to charge any such committee for the costs associated with removing any such sign.

Statement of Purpose:

To discourage the widespread violation of state right-of-way prohibitions by political campaigns and entities in erecting political signs that create public safety sight line issues and inappropriate costs to taxpayers for their removal by the Department of Transportation.
