3030 WHEREAS, some 1.4 million American members of the armed forces have given their lives in various wars in defense of freedom; and

3232 WHEREAS, the State of Connecticut and the nation as a whole should honor their service and sacrifice in perpetuity; and

3434 WHEREAS, the highest salute our nation can bestow on our military or public officials, including the President of the United States, is formally known as the "Twenty-One Gun Salute"; and

3636 WHEREAS, Americans who have given their lives in defense of the nation should be honored in a manner commensurate in dignity with the "Twenty-One Gun Salute"; and

3838 WHEREAS, observing a twenty-one-second moment of silence is an appropriate way to honor our fallen soldiers; and

4040 WHEREAS, out of the thirty-one million, five hundred thirty-six thousand seconds in a calendar year, two hundred fifty-two seconds should be utilized to honor Americans who have given their lives defending freedom to observe a twenty-one-second moment of silence each month and, in doing so, help this generation and future generations understand and respect the sacrifice made by these brave soldiers.

4242 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Connecticut General Assembly encourages the citizens of this state to honor, on the twenty-first day of each month, those who have fallen in military service to our nation during times of war by flying the United States flag at half-staff and pausing for a twenty-one-second moment of silence in remembrance of their heroic sacrifice.
