AN ACT CONCERNING MUNICIPAL TAX INCREASES.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

That the general statutes be amended to require that (1) any increase in the total tax levied by a municipality not exceed two and one-half per cent above the total tax levied by such municipality in the preceding fiscal year unless approved by a vote of not less than two-thirds of the members of the legislative body of such municipality, and (2) not later than fifteen business days following the date of such approval, two and one-half per cent of the legal voters of such municipality or seventy-five of such voters, whichever is greater, may petition for a referendum to reverse such approval.

Statement of Purpose: 

To provide for a ceiling on municipal tax increases.
