2424 AN ACT CONCERNING VETERINARY TECHNICIANS.

2626 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Assembly convened:

2828 Section 1. (NEW) (Effective October 1, 2017) (a) For purposes of this section:

3030 (1) "Veterinary technician" means a person who (1) has taken and obtained a passing score on the Veterinary Technician National Examination administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards, as determined by the Department of Public Health, or (2) prior to July 1, 2018, was performing the functions of the occupation with code number, 29-2056, and title, Veterinary Technologist and Technician, as described by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics Standard Occupational Classification system, or any successor system.

3232 (2) "Immediate supervision" means the veterinary technician is within direct visual and audible range of a veterinarian licensed under chapter 384 of the general statutes.

3434 (3) "Direct supervision" means a veterinarian licensed under chapter 384 of the general statutes is on the same premises as and is readily available to the veterinary technician.

3636 (4) "Indirect supervision" means a veterinarian licensed under chapter 384 of the general statutes is not on the same premises as the veterinary technician, but is able to oversee the duties of the veterinary technician by maintaining direct and contemporaneous communication with such technician.

3838 (b) A veterinary technician shall perform his or her duties under the immediate, direct or indirect supervision of a veterinarian licensed under chapter 384 of the general statutes, except that, in the case of an emergency where the licensed veterinarian is not physically present, a veterinary technician may render life-saving aid and treatment to an animal, provided the veterinary technician has received training in and is competent to provide such aid and treatment.
