19-AN ACT CONCERNING SU DDEN UNEXPECTED DEATH IN EPILEPSY.

2020 Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General

23-Section 1. (NEW) (Effective October 1, 2019) The Chief Medical 1
24-Examiner shall make a determination as to whether or not a person's 2
25-death was a sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, when (1) it requires 3
26-an autopsy pursuant to subsection (a) of section 19a-406 of the general 4
27-statutes in connection with (A) a sudden or unexpected death not 5
28-caused by a readily recognizable disease, or (B) a death under 6
29-suspicious circumstances, and (2) the deceased was diagnosed with 7
30-epilepsy. The Chief Medical Examiner shall note such determination 8
31-on the deceased's death certificate and issue a copy of such death 9
32-certificate to the North American Sudden Unexplained Death in 10
33-Epilepsy (SUDEP) Registry as soon as practicable after the completion 11
34-of the autopsy. For purposes of this section, "sudden unexpected death 12
35-in epilepsy" means the death of a person with epilepsy that is not 13
36-caused by injury, drowning or other known causes unrelated to 14
37-epilepsy. 15

27+a sudden, unexpected death in epilepsy, and (2) file the death 5
28+certificate with the North American SUDEP Registry. 6
